CES 2014: Razer shows off wondrously crazy (and sadly unrealistic) fully modular oil-cooled PC

2014-01-08 18:52:47| Extremetech

At CES 2014, Razer is showing off one of the craziest and most beautiful PCs ever imagined: A fully modular PC tower that is cooled with mineral oil. Each of the components, whether they're graphics cards, hard drives, or RAM, is stored within a self-contained pod that can be switched out at any time. Each pod is sealed and contains two self-sealing ports that, when plugged into the system's central spine, allow mineral oil to circulate and keep the components cool. Dubbed Project Christine, the modular PC is currently just a prototype, but if everything goes to plan Razer hopes to have a finalized version of Christine ready for CES 2015.

Lenovo brings Android to 4K monitor, all-in-one PC

2014-01-06 17:12:15| InfoWorld: Top News

Lenovo is going beyond smartphones and tablets with Android, putting the operating system in a unique 28-inch 4K smart monitor and a new, 19.5-inch all-in-one PC. The ThinkVision 28 is the first 4K monitor to be offered with Android, while the N308 all-in-one PC, which starts at $450, provides an Android alternative to Windows PCs. Android brings a familiar mobile user experience to desktops, with the ability to run apps and games and share files between devices, Lenovo officials said.

New types of RAM could revolutionize your PC

2014-01-06 14:44:06| InfoWorld: Top News

New chips that blur the line between computer memory and storage are starting to move beyond niche applications and could change how we use PCs, an industry analyst said Sunday. The chips would enable the same instant-on capability that's common on tablets, but at much higher performance, said Tom Coughlin, founder of Coughlin Associates.

Apples new overpriced $10,000 Mac Pro is $2,000 cheaper than the equivalent Windows PC

2013-12-30 16:27:56| Extremetech

Last week, the new Mac Pro finally went on sale. At $3000 for the entry-level model, and a max price of $9,600 for a customized top-of-the-line model with a 12-core CPU and two GPUs, the Mac Pro certainly isn't cheap. If you take a closer look at the spec, though, the Mac Pro, rather unusually for an Apple product, is a surprisingly good deal. If you try to match the components as closely as possible, it would actually cost around $11,500 to build the equivalent Windows-powered DIY PC.
