Apple smartphone share down in Q2, Android takes 79%

(Telecompaper) Apple's share of the smartphone market fell in the second quarter after the companny did not have a new iPhone on the market. Apple accounted for 13.2 percent of the 236.4 million smartphones shipped in the quarter, according to estimates from IDC. That's down from 16.6 percent a year ago. Android's share of the market rose to 79.3 percent from 69.1 over the same period, and Windows increased to 3.7 percent from 3.1 a year ago. BlackBerry's share dropped to 2.9 percent from 4.9, while Linux had 0.8 percent and Symbian 0.2 percent. Among Android vendors, Samsung leads at a distance with 39.1 percent of shipments in Q2. LG followed with 6.5 percent, Lenovo had 6.1 percent, and ZTE and Huawei each accounted for 5.4 percent. In the Windows market, Nokia led with 81.6 percent of shipments, followed by Samsung with 11.5 percent and HTC at 4.6 percent.
