In 1889, the year before condiments king Henry J. Heinz opened his iconic plant on the North Side, fellow Pittsburgher James Austin was launching a business across the river in Greenfield. A neighborhood grocer, Mr. Austin was stocking his shelves with a rug cleaning solution packaged in old Coke bottles that he and his wife had cooked up in the kitchen.
