Position Reference 952 You will have the opportunity to provide support to the Network Operations and Security Service Team within the Comms Competence Area. You will maintain and operate monitoring systems for the network and provide an information base containing configurations, reports and procedures. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Network Monitoring Reviewing on a daily basis the events reported on the network monitoring tools Collecting statistics on all comms links and the utilization of system resources Monitoring of the network and comms link status and performance, detecting network anomalies and raising alarms and notifications Provision of monthly performance reports on all WAN links e.g. for SLA conformance monitoring Provision of graphical displays to show the status of comms elements, particularly when backup elements are used Reporting of the configuration status of all comms equipment, with automatic detection of configuration changes Implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities Provision of all necessary support to ensure the seamless integration of the communications network with the ground segment hardware and application software Generation or update of technical documentation e.g. design specifications asbuiltasplanned, maintenance procedures, engineering change requests, anomaly reports, user guides Provision of onthejob training to other team members or to Operations controllers Provision of standbyoncall support when required Maintenance Maintenance of the configurations of network equipment including network monitoring platforms, ensuring that the operational configuration can be restored following equipment failure, including the definition, maintenance and execution of backup procedures Preparation for change proposals to support for network modifications supported where necessary with collected statistics or outstanding anomalies Configuration of network monitoringreporting tools Implementation of corrective measures, including testing and validation Liaising with server maintenance team for the provision of the workstations and servers dedicated to providing network connectivity gateways or the hosting of network monitoring tools Liaising with other teams for the investigation and resolution network related anomalies, or for the implementing of engineering upgrades and changes Liaising with the internal and external providers of network services for anomaly resolution, scheduling of maintenance windows, and planning and coordinating changes to the service Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory You have university degree or equivalent You have at least 5 years experience in the monitoring and reporting of networks in distributed systems and be experienced in the evolutionary upgrade engineering of networks throughout their lifecycle, and their administration and troubleshooting. Proven knowledge and handson experience with network management and monitoring techniques and tools Nagios, Netflow, Ntop, SNMP, Syslogng Proven knowledge and handson experience with configuration and use of the following tools cricket, rancid, smokeping, iperf Proven knowledge and handson experience with programmatic interaction with network equipment e.g. mib access using expect or perl scripting Proven knowledge and handson experience with storage of logs or configurations using structured information tools such as Rancid, RRD, MySQL, CVS You have sufficient knowledge of Unix based Operating Systems Redhat, Suse, Aix, Solaris, OpenBSD, Gentoo and Windows Operating Systems to configure and use the tools above You have experience in specifying, planning and preparing network engineering activities, as well as their coordination and technical guidance with other engineers within and outside the team involved in the activities, and with the customersusers and other stakeholders You have the ability to analyse complex systems and to present them in a comprehensible way, with the specific ability to understand relevant details while keeping the focus on the overall system aspects You have demonstrated capability to prepare the documents listed in the tasks above You have experience of working and performing the tasks listed above in 247 highavailability operations environments You have experience in monitoring and supervision of external service provider performance, knowledge of service management and SLAs.
