EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency monitoring the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year We are currently looking for a Competence Area Manager with a focus on Atmospheric Chemistry to join our international team of dynamic and inspiring engineers and industry professionals based in Darmstadt, Germany, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector. This role is rooted in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society! BACKGROUND The Remote Sensing and Products RSP division in EUMETSAT provides science support to the development and operations of endtoend satellite systems for EUMETSATs own purpose and on behalf of the European Commissions Copernicus Programme, focusing on the development, implementation and validation of operational observational products and processing chains. The Competence Area Manager Atmospheric Chemistry ACh CAM manages a team of scientists and has the scientific lead for all EUMETSAT activities related to atmospheric chemistry. In addition, the post holder provides the overall coordination of scientific activities in support of the EUMETSAT trace gas retrievals from UltravioletVisibleNearinfrared UVVisNIR instrumentation, including the GOME2 series, the Copernicus Sentinels4 and 5, and CO2M missions, and the improvements of current products and development of new products as agreed by EUMETSAT Member States. DUTIES Manage the Atmospheric Chemistry Competence Area ACh CA, leading a team of scientists and seeking continued development of the scientific knowledge required to support the exploitation, development, and evolution of product processing chains for EUMETSAT and Copernicus UVVisNIR instruments Lead the development, implementation and operations of all EUMETSAT and Copernicus scientific activities related to atmospheric chemistry, based on satellite observations, and including calibration and characterisation activities, for UVVisNIR instruments Assess requirements and priorities for calibration, intercalibration and validation of level1 products and support the definition and execution of product calibration and validation plans including for level2 products Coordinate all operations support activities for products derived from the atmospheric chemistry for UVVisNIR instruments Lead the definition and maintain the science roadmap for improving the atmospheric chemistry products for UVVisNIR instruments, responding to user requirements, including, including assessment of their value to user communities Interact with the communities of users, collect and analyse their feedback on the relevance and quality of the generated products and their requirements for improved products from UVVisNIR instruments Coconvene the ESAEUMETSAT GOME Science Advisory Group and the Sentinel45 Mission Advisory Group, liaise with external scientists, instigate and manage relevant prospective scientific studies, support and guide users and followon instruments Initiate and manage internal and external contributing studies Support the Satellite Application Facilities involved in the exploitation of EUMETSAT Atmospheric chemistry products, as required. What we offer Excellent salary, of up to Euro 8,500 month NET after tax and deductions based on skills and experience Flexible working time including additional flexileave Full medical coverage for employee and family Attractive final salary pension 30 days of annual leave 14.5 days public holidays Training and development support Relocation allowance and support if applicable SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Proven experience in atmospheric chemistry remote sensing and calibration and validation from satellites, including knowledge of atmospheric physics and radiative transfer Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate scientific teams, including management of performance and maintenance of key skills and knowledge Demonstrated leadership of development and implementation of operational remotesensing software Demonstrated experience in research and development, data processing from UVVisNIR, and potentially infrared spectrometers, and management of scientific projects. Demonstrated experience in liaising with international spaceindustry partners, space agencies, satellite remote sensing user communities and researchers Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including demonstrated experience in writing scientific and technical documents. QUALIFICATIONS An advanced university degree or equivalent in remote sensing, physics or another relevant discipline is required. LANGUAGE EUMETSAT is an international organisation with a working language of English. German language is not required to work here.
