A vacancy has arisen for a Deputy Materials Laboratory Manager with Astrium in Stevenage. The successful candidate will be responsible for controlling and managing the operation of the Materials Laboratory, in support of all Astrium products at Stevenage. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows To assign the workload in the Materials Laboratory To ensure that the Materials Laboratory and its equipment is maintained and replaced as necessary. To be a focal point for testing in the Materials Laboratory at Astrium Stevenage. To satisfy internal customers projects, product teams, manufacturing, procurement, through the activities performed in the field of material analysis and testing, on time and with respect to the process control and batch acceptance requirements. To support projects and product teams as a materials testing expert. To provide regular reporting to hierarchy. To represent the Materials Laboratory in meetings with other departments and external customers. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience Commercial experience in a chemical, mechanical or materials laboratory, in a materials and processes field. A degree in chemistry or a related discipline Good knowledge of materials including polymers, surface coatings, adhesives composites and metals Good knowledge of general chemical analytical techniques. Good knowledge of methods of testing and assessing materials to include mechanical testing, thermal analysis, microscopy optical and SEM, XRF, FTIR, contamination analysis and outgassing. Knowledge of materials and chemical processes as used in a high tech, high reliability environment. Experience in the space, aerospace, defence environment or highly regulated industry. Experience of multiple analytical techniques. Appreciation of audits and continuous improvement. Awareness of and ability to write and implement health safety, environment and COSHH processes.
