EO Calibration Quality Control Engineer Optical Instruments SCJ 2775 Summary A great opportunity for an experienced engineer to join an existing team supporting the calibration, data processing and quality control of optical Earth Observation data, with particular focus on the ATSR series of instruments. Background A range of roles within the team are envisaged including detailed studies into the calibration of specific instruments, management of routine QC and calval activities and the development and testing of new data processing software. Support is particularly required for ATSR Calibration StudyThis is a researchstyle project, the aim of which is to explore and verify the calibration of the SWIR channel across all three ATSR instruments and looking forward to the SLSTR instrument using accepted community standards, for both nadir and forward viewing geometries, by Conducting a literature review to establish current best practice in SWIR calibration and approaches used for the ATSR instruments so far. Researching possible reference data sets that could be used for the verification. One particular goal is to compare ATSR SWIR data with an additional CEOS reference site httpcalvalportal.ceos.orgceoslandnetsites. Other possibilities include techniques using cloud targets and sunglint. Conducting an intercomparison interrogating the ATSR data, comparing to the reference data and reporting results. If appropriate, making recommendations for changes to the relevant data processing algorithms for ATSR12 and AATSR or defining a postprocessing correction, in an Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document ATBD. Prototyping any newrevised processing software routines. Support to the Upgrade of ATSR Processing This is preparatory work for the 4th reprocessing of ATSR data to ensure a smooth transition towards the Sentinel3 mission and products. Tasks would include Overseeing the specification of revised AATSR L1b algorithms and products for alignment with SLSTR Overseeing the implementation of the revised algorithms in new processing software Verification and testing of the new software processing Initial validation of the resulting products Liaison with AATSR expert subcontractors Liaison with the AATSR user community General support to ESA concerning the AATSR mission and transition to SLSTR Routine QC and CalValVEGA provides operational services to monitor the quality of a range of EO instrument data. These services aim to Conduct all QC, CalVal and support activities that can be made operational. Provide support to mission teams for all operational issues that are within the remit of data quality and algorithm management. Maintain QC and analysis tools Support the maintenance and evolution ground segment processors Evolve QC operations so as to achieve lower costs, greater efficiency, and standardization Prepare Product Quality Information available to end users and provide support to user queries The role may also be expanded to include Emphasis on reprocessing and the QC of resulting data CalVal coordination activities Liaison with Expert Support Laboratories with algorithm development, verification and sensor calibration roles. Support to Long Term Data Preservation activities The post in question would support these activities for historical, current and future optical instrument including ATSR1, ATSR2, AATSR, MERIS, Landsat, JERSSAR, ALOS, SPOT, SeaWifs, MODIS, AVHRR,SLSTR and OLCI. Experience required Background in Earth Observation or space systems engineering Understanding of mediumlow resolution opticalIR remote sensing EO data handlinganalysismodelling skills Ability to understand, specify and prototype and evaluate data processing algorithms Familiarity with the ATSR series of instruments would be a bonus. Essential Skills Familiarity with inflight vicarious calibration techniques and data sources over ground sites, cloud targets, sun glint etc. Experience of intercalibration of EO instruments Understanding of effects of instrumentviewing geometry on calibration Knowledge of data processing concepts up to L1b calibrated Brightness TemperaturesReflectance Awareness of the state of the art of visSWIR calibration especially outside Europe Specific SWIR 1.6 micron calibration domain knowledge would be a bonus Desirable Skills Experience delivering operational services Understanding of the endtoend EO system Basic coding and scripting Software testingverification Serviceprogramme management Qualities Must have demonstrated experience in the following areas Drive, initiative and innovation Excellent communication skills for liaison with customer andor users Flexibility when undertaking researchprototyping style tasks Further Details Some travel will be required within Europe All roles within Telespazio VEGA have a defined closing date, however if a successful candidate is found before the advert expires the role will be closed early. We would therefore advise any candidate to apply as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Closing Date for applications is 31st March 2014 Location of the position is Luton, UK. Benefits A comprehensive benefits package Security In line with Asylum Immigration Legislation, all applicants must be eligible to live and work in the EU. Documented evidence of eligibility will be required from candidates as part of the recruitment process. Furthermore, in view of the nature of the work the company is in, all potential employees will undergo stringent reference and identity checks.
