The Mission The main responsibility of this position is to modernise, streamline and extend the existing ORATOS software tool, which provides the user interface for the European Space Operation Centres flight dynamics software. The Challenge We are looking for a Flight Dynamics Consultant Software Engineer to be located at the customer site, ESOC. The current Flight Dynamics applications are written in FORTRAN and run on a SolarisSPARC platform. The development of facilities for different mission families was essentially done in isolation. Hence, there is redundancy across mission families. In the course of reusing the facilities for new missions the software was adapted continuously to new and changing requirements. As a result the initial software design and architecture falls short of todays multimission requirements, making maintenance of the current Flight Dynamics systems difficult. The selected consultant will support and facilitate the preparation and definition of the implementation of ORATOS NG. A number of requirements, design decisions, objectives and guidelines need to be gathered, recorded, maintained and promulgated. These positions are planned with a starting date of August 2013. Interviews are planned in Darmstadt for the second half of June, with the selection decisions tentatively to be announced on 5 July. Your Qualifications Applicants shall have a superior university degree, preferably in aerospace, electronics or astrophysics, mathematics, space engineering or other relevant discipline or other suitable qualification together with some professional experience. Essential skills are A university degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or equivalent Prior experience in design, development and validation of flight dynamics systems andor flight dynamics tools Experience in technical programming in FORTRAN, C, Java, etc. Experience and expertise in software engineering English fluency spoken and written, both in formal and informal situations. Note that English is the working language Applicants should hold appropriate documentation and permits for working and living in Germany. Desirable Specific experience with the ORATOS software, especially in its design, development and maintenance Familiarity with the specific flight dynamics software packages currently running under ORATOS Some experience in flight dynamics Experience with the early phases of software project requirement definition, design tradeoffs of a similar scope Experience with software migration readaptation of existing software Experience with software documentation and related standards Some exposure to project management Experience in a similar consultancy role, as onsite resident at a scientific operational organization Some background with international organisations. The position requires a great deal of independence and selfmotivation. The candidate should be able to work with little supervision, but also be able to contribute to the team effort. In order to get up to speed quickly, the candidate will be expected to gain a rapid familiarisation with the spacecraft, as well as the ground systems at ESOC.
