Java Software Engineer

This position, in a scientific organisation based near Munich in Germany, calls for at least three years experience of Java across the full software development life cycle. The main working language is English. The role will embrace the development, deployment and maintenance of various software tools for an archive facility. These tools include dynamic web applications for interactive exploration of the archive contents and for downloading archive assets. The consultant will be assigned to the further development of the facility, following an agile, featuredriven development process. The key experience and attributes sought are Software development in Java Knowledge of relational databases and SQL Development of dynamic web applications using HTML, CSS and Javascript. Good knowledge of the Linux operating system Experience of modern software engineering practices and tools, including configuration control tools, incremental and iterative development, unit and integration testing and build systems like Ant or Maven. Excellent command of the English language very good oral and written communication skills Some of the following would be advantageous Experience with GroovyGrails Experience with HibernateSpring Experience with .1QueryAngularJS Familiarity with scientific data archives Familiarity with astronomical data formats FITS Flexible Image Transport System Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent. This is a freelance contract assignment with an initial period of 3 years starting in July 2015 with an option to extend for a further two years. Occasional travel within Europe and further afield is likely to be required.
