Lead Optical Systems Engineer STFC RAL Space Science and Technology Facilities Council STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire 49,708 55,231 Dependent on experience Permanent, Full Time About the role The role requires a highly experienced optical engineer with a proven track record in leading the design and build of novel optical instrumentation. The work spans the entire project life cycle, from early stage RD right through to instrument verification calibration and potentially mission postlaunch support. It provides an opportunity to work within a multinational consortium and an opportunity to lead exciting international projects. In addition, RAL Space has key roles in groundbased astronomical instrumentation through the UKs Astronomy programme. New RAL Space projects with significant optical engineering requirements include ARIEL an Exoplanet mission for ESA, Lagrange a Space Weather mission to monitor potentially disruptive solar activity on Earthinfrastructures and a Quantum Key Distribution QKD secure communications technology demonstrator a UK Singapore collaboration. We are also involved in the development of HARMONI a firstlight instrument for the European Extremely Large Telescope. The emphasis of our work is on the design and engineering of new, oneoff, stateoftheart instrumentation. About you A vast amount of experience and an in depth understanding of imaging and spectrographic optical systems is essential for this role. You will have a proven record of accomplishment in the design, build and testing of optical instrumentation. You will be able to demonstrate your ability to lead the development of optical instrumentation and your experience in leading teams is key. Additional skills required are an understanding of straylight analysis and control, the ability to explain technical concepts effectively and the ability to develop collaborations with academic and industrial partners. You will also have authored and or refereed conference papers. The Science Technology Facilities Council is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation UKRI. The Optical Systems Group is responsible for the conception, design, development, procurement, assembly, integration and test of optical systems for space instrumentation in Space Science, Solar Research, Earth Observation, Planetary science and optical communications.
