As described in "Making Smart Phones Smarter with Photonics," which appeared in OSA's Optics Express journal, researchers from Montreal and New York-based company Corning Inc describe laser-written, light-guiding systems efficient enough to be developed for commercial use. This technology could open up new real estate in phone by embedding glass with layer upon layer of sensors, including ones that could take temperature, assess blood sugar levels, or even analyze DNA.
