Summary An opportunity for an experienced Materials and Processes Evaluation Engineer to work onsite at ESA, Harwell for Telespazio VEGA UK Objective To provide support for the Materials and Processes Section for projects where Product Assurance and Safety Managers are based at ECSAT, primarily in the area of processing, testing and performance evaluation of metallic materials and in the areas of Additive Manufacturing and PCB testing. Responsibilities Duties Duties will include but are not limited to The laboratory tasks shall especially cover End to end process evaluation for additive manufacturing, including raw material specification and product performance mechanical testing, NDI, etc. Destructive and nondestructive PCB testing. Additional tasks shall cover Provide materials and processes support for projects where product assurance and safety managers are located at ECSAT, including participation to projects meeting, reviews and audits Support Materials and Processes reviews, Materials and Processes Control Boards MPCBs and participate as Engineering andor PA Board Member in ESA Programme reviews milestones including PRRs, SRRs, PDRs, CDRs, QARs, FRRs, etc. Review Declared Materials, Parts and Processes Lists DMLs, DPLs, and DMPLs as well as RFAs, RFDsRFWs, ECPs, etc. Support major NonConformances Review Board activities, perform failure analysis and failure investigation using a variety of laboratory tools Support the definition and implementation of the Research and Technology activities in the domain of advanced manufacturing Support the evaluation of proposals for technology RD activities on their technical merit, consistency and priorities and recommendation for ESA endorsement Support the coordination of technology RD activities, monitoring of the procurement implementation, evaluation and reporting of the achieved results and lessons learnt to the relevant ESA Directorates and key Partners The technical competence shall especially cover Processing e.g. joining, surface treatments, testing, and performance evaluation of metallic materials e.g. Alalloys, Tialloys, steel Additive manufacturing processes and associated test and qualification approaches Qualifications Experience Masters degree or equivalent qualification in materials engineering and science, materials physicsmetallurgy andor nonmetallic materials or another related field, as well as several years industrial experience Good knowledge about general materials test methodologies and especially experience in mechanical testing. Experience in defining and executing test plans for materials qualification and process validation Capability to take decisions for selection of materials and processes for space applications. Essential Skills Good English language skills Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to present and effectively communicate quality system processes. Good organisational and communication skills, with the ability to work in a diverse team environment. Candidates must be eligible for security clearance from their national security administration. Excellent organisation skills for projects execution and associated documentation. Fluency in English and Spanish. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description Science Coordinator for Fluid Physical Sciences in the SciSpacE Team, Research and Utilization Group, Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes. Duties Under the direct authority of the Team Leader, the postholder will be responsible for inputs to programmatic and strategic planning, for the endtoend science coordination of projects in the physical sciences, and for the following tasks notably coordinating the physical sciences discipline by setting priorities, delegating scientific guidance tasks, stimulating feedback and encouraging personal growth promoting synergy and efficient collaboration with the Teams other science disciplines maintaining direct contact with the scientific community, monitoring developments in and defining the research strategy for the physical sciences defining the scientific content and priorities for research announcements overseeing initiation and management of topical teams, applied research and EC projects overseeing research projects, including relevant hardware and mission implementation steps acting as Project Scientist for selected projects representing ESA in the International Microgravity Strategic Planning Group IMSPG, coordinating international activities in the physical sciences acting as Executive Secretary for ESAs Physical Sciences Working Group PSWG and supporting the advisory groups of other ESA Directorates supporting the reporting to ESA delegate and administrative bodies supporting the promotion of results via scientific publications, organised workshops, symposia, etc. Technical competencies Knowledge of scientific discipline, including strategic vision of the area of Fluid Physical science Knowledge of large international scientific research collaborations, preferably using spacebased techniques Knowledge of space projects, including instrumentation and operations Knowledge of international scientific community Experience in supporting ESA programmesprojects and knowledge of their technical and programmatic requirements in relevant technical domains Project and technical management Behavioural competencies Ambassadorship Communication Relationship Management Systems Broader Business Thinking Teamwork Innovation Creativity Education Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant physical sciences discipline. Additional requirements Applicants should have demonstrated experience in physical sciences project management. Personal research experience in the physical sciences. Handson experience with spaceflight experiments and knowledge of endtoend implementation of ISS research. Experience of other platforms such as sounding rockets, drop towers and parabolic flight is an additional asset. Demonstrated leadership capability and a developed relationship management skills. A resultsoriented approach to working in a complex environment and a strong capacity for planning and organising tasks. Candidates should be system minded, able to work in an interdisciplinary team and have good communication skills.
