Oil industry decline is main cause of falling Scottish retail sales, experts say

A heavy fall in retail sales in Scotland in contrast to a rise in sales south of the border is mostly likely attributable to the fall in profitability of Scotland's important oil and gas industry, according to leading economists polled by the Sunday Herald. New figures published last week showed that the value of retail sales in Scotland in November was down sharply on a year earlier, in contrast to a rise in the UK as a whole.
