Power Systems Engineer

Contract, Approximately 1.5 working days per week for 12 months Astroscale is seeking to employ an experienced and motivated Power Engineer to work on key projects, which are based in the Harwell, UK offices. The work is foreseen to take place over a 12month contract. Flexible working arrangements are available, but regular team working at the UK offices is expected. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and rapidly growing company seeking to make a positive contribution to the growing problem of orbital debris that endangers mankinds continued use of space as an asset. The candidate will primarily work on UK officebased projects, but they may need to interact with teams across Astroscales Global Offices as needed in support of Astroscale projects and operations. Responsibilities Manage and review the development and design activities for power subsystems on Astroscale spacecraft maintain subsystem requirements review subsystem architecture review tradeoff analysis of hardware software solutions support power budgets review FMECA inputs and FDIR processes manage and ensure compliance to the grounding scheme across the spacecraft understand and review the interaction between the different elements of the power subsystem generation solar panels, storage battery and distribution PCDU Coordinate with other teams at subsystem and at system level to define ConOps, ICDs, development and verification plans. Plan subsystems and system level verification tests, including environmental testing. Interact with partners and suppliers for the provision of power system equipment. Support procurement engineers with specification, tradeoff and selection of power system equipment. Participate in review of the deliverables in support of the project milestones. Essential Skills Diploma bachelor or masters degree in electrical engineering or relevant engineeringscience discipline. 5 years of commercial experience of designing and testing power subsystems for satellites. Understanding of solar panel specification, manufacturing process, handling and testing. Experience sizing, procuring, testing and integrating satellite batteries and an awareness the storage handling requirements for batteries. Experience in constructing grounding philosophies and grounding diagrams for spacecraft architectures. Experience of designing and testing EGSE for the purposes of powering the satellite during the AIT phase. Good understanding of spacecraft mission lifecycle and milestones e.g. MDR, PDR, CDR, etc. Good understanding of system engineering managing requirements through the full project lifecycle. Desired Skills Demonstrable experience of spacecraft design lifecycle at all stages from initial concept to design, test, and operations. Operational experience of power systems on spacecraft missions. Experience of analysis radiation tolerances and knowledge of radiation hardness assurance for Low Earth Orbit applications. Whilst the working language across all Astroscale divisions is English, proficiency in spoken andor written Japanese would be considered an asset.
