JOB DESCRIPTION Product Processing Integration Engineer for the EPS Data and Product Processing Facilities As members of the SEP LEO Mission Data Processing Operational Applications maintenance team, the Key Person shall support the maintenance and evolution of the EPS Ground Segment, specifically the development and integration of new PPF. The application software is mainly developed in C and a good experience in C is therefore mandatory. For the PPF support knowledge of C will be needed in addition. The Key Persons duties will include a range of tasks, from the support of the day to day operation and maintenance, the analysis, design, development and testing of the facilities which also includes the handling of anomalies, upgrades and configuration changes for these facilities. The Key Person will be the focal point when it comes to integrating each individual Product Processing Facility into a system context, covering all aspects from early SW development, definition of interfaces, system integration and testing, and end to end testing of the production system. Tasks will also contain the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures as well as the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. In support to operations, the Key Person may also be required to provide on call support as partof a team of maintenance engineers. Besides the above described routine tasks, the Key Person will also be expected to contribute to design and system engineeringreengineering activities in the field of science data processing that will become necessary for existing and future production systems. Candidate areas are programmes such as Jason, Saral, EARS, Sentinel 3, etc. Responsibilities Duties Tasks Typically tasks will include 1. Contribute to the definition and design of architectures of data processing ground segments and their components, their interfaces, and the validation and verification methods. 2. Monitor the detailed design and implementation of new system software components by industrial contractors and perform the acceptance of externally developed components. 3. Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. This will also include Upgrade software, including implementing and maintaining new algorithms and products for the EPS instrument suite, including rationalising common data processing components such as software libraries to reduce cost. 4. Support to procurement activities for maintenance and evolution activities as described under point 3. 5. Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as 5.1 Support the Configuration Management process and the building and distribution of software releases and patches 5.2 Support to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing 5.3 Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification. 5.4 Follow up of the delivery of SW resolutions for these anomalies 6. Perform standard SW engineering activities such as 6.1 SW testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered SW is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected. 6.2 SW integration and verification in the EUMETSAT ground segments 7. Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, 8. Support to the procurement and installation of software, and the coordination with external providers of support services 9. Participation in meetings and formal reviews Required knowledge In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Key Person shall have experience in SW development, configuration controlled software build environments, experience with the operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of large, complex, realtime data processing systems. The Key Person shall have a minimum of 5 years work experience in UNIX application development and testing in C, C. The Key Person should possess very good communication, presentation and team working skills and be able to cope with very high workloads. An ability to adapt to a rapidly changing, often stressful environment and retain a system overview is also essential. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following areas is mandatory Experience of operating and maintaining software systems in a UNIX based environment specifically LINUX and AIX Software build environments and tools e.g. IBM XL C and GCC compilers, make, automake, autoconf Software debugging and profiling tools e.g. GDB, DBX, IBM Purify, Valgrind Performance analysis and improvement including Performance monitoring tools and techniques top, NMON, iostat, sar etc. in UNIX environments Source code control systems, preferably Subversion and CVS CC programming language experience in a UNIX based environment Competence in the use of scripting languages e.g., shell scripting and highlevel languages e.g., Python, Java. Competence in SW testing, unit test suite maintenance, automated testing, verification and validation. Practical knowledge of as many as possible of the following areas will be an advantage Experience with operational Earth Observation science data processing Knowledge of web technologies, programming and markup languages e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript Data visualisation tools, e.g. IDL, ENVI Competence in the exploitation of modern hardware and operating systems at the application level e.g., multithreading, parallel programming e.g. MPI, OpenMP, virtualization. Competence in objectoriented software design and implementation in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems, Familiarity with data formats used, such as the Metop and NOAA global data formats, EPS native data format, formats based on XML Knowledge of relevant Standards, Quality Assurance and Configuration Management principles and applications. Very good technical writing skills, in particular in the area of formal technical documentation, e.g. design documentation, test procedures, maintenance procedures. The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require the Key Person to be able to work with a high degree of autonomy and to demonstrate good analytical skills. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the Key Person must be able to work effectively in this language.
