A Spanish leader company in Aerospace Engineering and Scientific services with more than 45 years of experience working for NASA and 35 years working for ESA seeks a candidate for a System and Software Engineering for Science Operations. ESA is operating and developing several spacecraft for Solar System body exploration, among others Mars Express MEX, ExoMars2016, Rosetta, Venus Express VEX, BepiColombo and Solar Orbiter. For these missions the science operations is located at ESAC. One of the components of science operations is the task of generating the commands to operate the scientific payload of a spacecraft. Three main entity categories are involved in this task the PI teams having built the experiments, a Mission Operations Center MOC which coordinates the satellite operations and a Science Ground Segment SGS which coordinates the operations of the scientific payload. A second task of the science operations is in the area of downlink and archiving where the success of an observation needs to be tracked and the resultant products from the PI teams archived for access by the planetary community. The Rosetta Science Operations in the RSGS are led by the Rosetta Science Operations Managers in close coordination with the Mission Manager, who has overall responsibility for the Rosetta mission, and with the Project Scientist, who is responsible for optimizing the science return of Rosetta. The Rosetta Operations and Planning Group is comprised of a number of operational engineers and scientists. A basic principle of the Rosetta science operations is the requirement for a strong involvement by each PI team for the preparation of the science operations. The Science Working Team SWT advises the project scientist on science matters for the mission and indirectly assists the RSGS in elaborating science strategies and maximizing the scientific return of the mission. WP1 LongTerm Planning Support for Rosetta Tasks Support the creation of observation sequences from the requests provided by the PI teams Using the applicable software, develop a proposal for a schedule of observations. Expected output Support to the preparation of specific science operations, which fulfill the Master science plan WP2 MediumTerm Planning MTP support for Rosetta Tasks Iterate on the collection of the mediumterm planning inputs from the PI teams Using the ASPEN, EPS, MAPPS and other software tools, check the PI input for correctness Support, where required, specific PI teams in the generation of their MTP level products Support the creation of and delivery to the MOC of the consolidated operational requests in the form of Pointing Requests PTR and Payload Operational Request POR files Support any iterationsupdates of the operational requests with the RMOC Expected output Implementation mediumterm plans consisting of Pointing Requests PTR and Instrument Timelines ITL. Documented process and planning files storage in GIT MTP planning files delivery to the Rosetta Mission Operations Center. WP3 ShortTerm Planning STP support for Rosetta Tasks Iterate on the collection of the shortterm planning input from the PI teams Using the EPS, MAPPS and other software tools, check the PI input for correctness Support, where required, specific PI teams in the generation of their STP level products Support the creation of and delivery to the RMOC of the consolidated operational requests in the form of Payload Operational Request POR files Support any iterationsupdates of the operational requests with the RMOC Expected output Generation validation of STP Payload Operational Request files to be sent to the RMOC WP4 Archive support for Rosetta Tasks Interact with the Downlink Science Operations Manager and Project Scientist to ensure that Rosetta archive needs are addressed in the area of general PDS and PSA software development. Such interactions shall include the provision of requirements. Interact with the PSA Software developer to check the correct implementation of user requirements Aid in the validation of PSA software specific to the Rosetta mission, including DVAL, PRVV APC, Archie interface. Interact with the PDS for issues specific to the Rosetta mission archive Interact with and provide support to the PI teams in the area of archive product generation, delivery validation Support the archive product validation process including reviews. Expected output Validated archive deliveries from the PI teams Support to the archive process Travel It is foreseen that the candidates may have to travel to ESA establishments and PI institutes, approximately 46 times per year. Requirements Knowledge of astronomical instrumentation, acquired through astronomical instrument hardware development andor intensive astronomical data reduction exercise. Experience and understanding of farinfrared instruments is a distinct advantage. Experience in interacting with the scientific community. An interest in performing science research with the mission data is considered a plus. APPLICATIONS Interested candidates should send cv and cover letter to seleccionisdefe.es. The job code must included on the subjet.
