Applicants must hold a current valid work permit for Spain or be EU nationals. For our activities in the European Space Agency, we are currently seeking to employ a highly Scientist to support ESAESAC Science Gaia Operations. Gaia is a major astrophysics mission within the ESA science programme. A large and active scientific community is deeply involved in the preparatory tasks for the mission, in particular for the data processing and analysis tasks. These tasks are the responsibility of the scientific community, organized under the umbrella of the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC. This consortium consists of more than 400 active scientists and engineers making significant contributions to the preparations for the ultimate product of the Gaia mission the Gaia catalogue. The Project Scientist is responsible for all scientific aspects of the mission. A small team of scientists assists him in this task. One aspect is the support of DPAC activities through the provision of essential information services, ensuring access to ESA provided resources, maintaining a current and archive document system, and ensuring effective information flow between all parties involved. This support will be the primary concern of the candidate. The successful applicant will be a member of the Gaia Project Scientists Support Team based in RSSD at ESTEC. The role of the team is to support and advise the Gaia project team, the Gaia Science Operation Centre team at ESAC and the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC on all scientific aspects of the mission. Within the team the candidate will be expected to support the daytoday activities of the SOC and DPAC by acting as Information Manager within the team, ensuring access for SOCDPAC to the resources provided by the Project Scientist, supporting activities in the domain of outreach to the Gaia scientific community within the boundaries established by the existing ESA infrastructure. Deliverables The candidate will be required to Maintain and develop the web pages and associated tools used by the Gaia scientific community for the organization and coordination of scientific development activities Maintain the scientific documentation database for Gaia, and facilitate and promote its use within the Gaia scientific collaboration Support internal and external scientific meetings, workshops, and conferences related to Gaia Provide appropriate projectrelated information to the external scientific community, as requested, and with the approval of the Gaia Project Scientist Support the interface between the Project Scientist and the ESA communication bodies Qualifications and Requirements Essential Skills Applicants require Masters Degree, or equivalent, in space science, or closely related scientific or engineering field. Webbased communication tools especially web site management wiki use programming methods for example, some of java, xml, php, perl Experience working in a scientific environment is required. You will be able to work independently and posses excellent interpersonal and communication skills Fluency in English, both spoken and written is required. You will be able to demonstrate an interest in outreach activities andor educational support would be an asset. Desirable Skills Previous ESA experience is an asset.
