This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to cover assistance for the support, analysis, development and research activities of the ESA Space Debris Office as listed below. The position is based at our customer ESOC in Darmstadt with a start from 15.10.2017. The position is fulltime and permanent. Closing date is 04.08.2017. ResponsibilitiesDuties Provision of compliance verification analysis directly to mission customers In support of missions, perform runs with DRAMA, Scarab and Snapshot and document the results Provide a methodology for the verification of protected zone clearance and onground casualty aspects for missions operating on HEOs and orbits around Lagrange Points Establish a space object environment index concept based on fast cloud propagation algorithms. Expand the approach for longer time spans and all LEO altitude bands Contributions on space environment evolution studies involving DISCOS and other databases Provide the above services during CDF sessions Provide Training on OPSGR software and processes to internal and external trainees also in training sessions not organised by ESA Provide routine operation of ESAs conjunction event prediction system for internal and external customers in a 247 shift scheme up to 7 weeks per year Detailed analysis and consultancy in the case of a highrisk conjunction event in liaison with the Flight Control Teams, external customers and Flight Dynamics Contribute to the maintenance of ESAs conjunction event prediction system and documentation Contribute to the evolution and upgrade of ESAs DISCOS database system Contribute to the ESAs reentry forecasting process Standby for project support in the areas of Cleanspace and SSA Support to the interfacing with external entities, such as JSpOC for the analysis of conjunction events Resent and promote ESA achievements, recent research and work performed at the space debris office at international conferences once per year, and support related public relation or outreach activities QualificationsExperience Completed university degree in mathematics, physics, engineering or equivalent with high grades Fluency in English, both in speech and writing Essential Skills A high degree of independence Understand the way the CDF, IADC and SSA program works Negotiation skills Coordination of Systems and Reference Frames and Orbital Mechanics Space Debris Matters observation, modelling, mitigation, risk assessment Orbit determination aspects Space surveillance techniques and principles Software engineering The PCLinux and PCWindows environment, network services and protocols Webbased database frontends Shell scripting languages, Python, Fortran, C, Matlab Public Relations and Media Interviews Versioning systems and configuration management Database systems, in particular the use of SQL Basic understanding of the hardware PCs, RAID, back up mechanisms Ensuring a seamless operation of the software systems in routine processes, retrieval of the necessary data Desirable Skills Familiarity with the ESOC environment Familiarityexperience with Space Debris engineering tasks, including user experience for DISCOS and DRAMA Version control systems git Issue trackers redmine.
