Twitter turns over racist tweet data to French authorities

2013-07-12 15:29:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Twitter has complied with a court order to hand over information that can be used to identify the authors of anti-semitic tweets in a case brought by the France's Jewish students' union, backed by other anti-racism groups. The French authorities seek the disclosure of this data through a court order, although it reportedly also does so in secret, the way web companies are required to provide data under the US government's FISA request system. The settlement ends all litigation with the student union, announced the social network. The two parties agreed to actively pursue their collaboration in fighting racism and anti-semitism in compliance with their respective national legislations. Le Monde writes that the US company has already made some concessions with respect to a wave of homophobe tweets during the recent national debate on gay marriage. Twitter gave the charity SOS Homophobie a special account a few months ago to allow it to quickly alert the company to homophobic hashtags and to prevent the messages from appearing as trending topics.
