The University of North Dakota UND, Department of Space Studies is seeking qualified applicants for a nontenuretrack, 9month, Research Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is December 2018. Space Studies is a strong, interdisciplinary program featuring a Ph.D. in Aerospace Sciences, an M.S. degree in Space Studies, and an undergraduate minor. This faculty position will enhance and complement the departments current emphasis in space policy and law, space history, planetary science, space systems engineering, human spaceflight, and management of space organizations. Position Description, Duties, Responsibilities The Department of Space Studies is seeking a Research Assistant Professor in the area of Space Life Sciences. Approximately 70 of effort will involve research with the expectation that the successful applicant will establish a productive program of funded research in the space life sciences, which may include, among others, human adaptation to longduration space flight, space medicine or psychology, or closedloop environmental control systems. Approximately 20 of the faculty members effort will involve teaching and advising graduate and undergraduate students on campus and through distancelearning technologies. An additional 10 effort is expected provision of service to the space community and the University. This position is intended to strengthen the existing research capabilities of the Space Studies department to enable more expansive pursuit and execution of human research in space exploration. The Space Studies department has enjoyed consistent success in obtaining research grants for spacesuit and analogue habitat development. This Research Assistant Professor would enable the department to be more competitive for NASA, NSF, and, potentially, commercial funding in an area of extensive research interest. This position is oriented both to basic and applied research in that the objectives of the effort will contribute to a better understanding of space biology, environmental factors, exercise physiology, habitability, human factors, medical capabilities, physiology, psychosocial and behavioral health, and space radiation challenges pertaining to human exploration and development of space. The primary responsibilities are to develop a credible, sustained program of funded research in space life sciences from NASA, NSF, and other appropriate funding sources, and to teach in the area of space life sciences. The primary focus areas should involve one or more of the following Space biology Environmental factors on the human in space Exercise physiology Habitability Human factors Medical capabilities Physiology Psychosocial and behavioral health Space radiation The individual selected for this position would be expected to bring funded research and to further actively pursue extramural funding from NASA, NSF and other appropriate, including commercial, funding sources. Additional duties include service to the space community at the national and international level, to the University, and to society. Description of Duties Research 70 Establish a sustained, competitive, externallyfunded program of research in space life sciences Publish the results of that research in peerreviewed scholarly journals Develop research strategies that align with and further Goal 4 of the University strategic plan Develop collaborations within UND and the state of North Dakota that not only support longduration human space exploration but also may lead to applications to terrestrial health challenges, particularly in solving health and social problems in rural communities Develop research collaborations with the aerospace industry that lead to longterm relationships, to include research endowments Teaching 20 Update and present current curriculum courses in campus and distance modes up to 4 courses As appropriate, develop new courses in space life sciences consistent with instructor interest and student demand Advise student academic programs Review and critique independent studies, theses, and dissertations Substantially increase enrollment in the space life sciences specialty Develop and implement pedagogies to improve the effectiveness of STEM education Service 10 Serve on University, School, and Departmental committees as appropriate Serve in a leadership role in the professional space community Requirements Minimum Requirements Earned Ph.D.M.D., from a regionally accredited university ABD considered. Satisfactory completion of criminal history records check Preferred Requirements Professional experience in space life sciences. Established evidence of successful, externally funded research and publications. Current professional contacts within the space academic, public service, or industry communities. Current extramural funding in life sciences research. Teaching experience at the graduate level in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Active membership in national or international professional organizations related to space life sciences e.g. AIAA, AsMA, or HFES. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
