Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc in OptoMechanical Structural Assessment of Space Systems This post is classified F2 on the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description The Structures, Mechanisms and Materials Division is the centre of competence for the Agency in all areas related to spacecraft and launcher structures, mechanisms and materials and processes. This encompasses spacecraft and launcher lightweight structures, stable structures, structural dynamics, damage tolerance, deployable structuresbooms, active structures, holddown and release devices, electrical motors for space mechanisms, launcher and reentry vehicles, hot and cold structures, landing attenuation systems, seals, valves, parachute systems, separation systems, solar array drive mechanisms, reaction wheels, pointing mechanisms, pyrotechnics, bearings and tribology aspects, all materials and associated manufacturing processes as well as their development, characterization, verification and qualification and related failure investigations. The Division provides support to projects, preparatory programmes and technology programmes. Within this frame, the Structures Section is in charge of all structural engineering aspects. Fields of activitiesresearch The proposed activity will involve integrating thermal, materials, mechanical, structural and optical domains into a multidisciplinary process with the aim of enabling a deterministic assessment of, for example, optical performance. The successful candidate will be assigned to the Structures Section and will work on the conception, analysis and development of analysis methodologies and software tools for optomechanical analysis and will work closely with mechanical, thermal, materials and optical engineers. In this context, the Research Fellow will be asked to participate in one or more of the following activities Structural modelling and analysis of optical components, optomechanical assemblies and optical payloads to assess structural integrity, dimensional stability and material selection for architecture downselect Thermoelastic structural analysis to evaluate the pointing control and stability, wave front error, coregistration and alignment of optical components and payloads Development of analysis software tools with a focus on optomechanical analysis Evaluation or benchmarking of relevant commercial software tools Support materials test programmes for the evaluation of the mechanical and thermal properties of optical materials, coatings and adhesives Support mechanical and optical test programmes, including the development and application of tools for mathematical model correlation between analytically predicted and experimentally validated optical alignment, coregistration and wavefront error. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Additional requirements The candidate should have ideally participated in the design or development of ground or spacebased optical payloads or instrumentation. Some experience in the mechanical design, assembly, alignment and testing of optical instrumentation would be an asset. The Research Fellow must be able to work in a team with other international investigators in a spirit of positive cooperation and, at the same time, be capable of working autonomously in hisher area of research. At the end of the fellowship, the Research Fellow will be required to summarize the work completed in papers to be submitted to specialized conferencesjournals. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. Optical Mechanical Design Engineer Job Ref 664 Key Purpose of Job Reports to SSTL are looking for motivated, dynamic and organised engineer with a high attention to detail and excellent technical knowledge to help shape and influence current and future flight optical instruments. You will be responsible for supporting the mechanical design, analysis and build of new optical instrument subsystems from concept through to ground verification testing and flight whilst working closely with lead optical system and principal optical mechanical engineers. You will report to the Optical Mechanical Design Assembly Team Leader. Key Tasks Working within project teams providing support to senior optical mechanical design engineers to develop working designs for optical systems to meeting the requirements set by the optical, electronic and systems engineers. Optical mechanical system design from initial concept to detailed final design using 3D modelling. Undertake thermal, static and dynamic structural and optical element surface deflection analysis of components and at system level in collaboration with the Senior Mechanical Analyst. Complete manufacturing drawings to enable the designs to be manufactured Undertake preparation and integration of the mechanical components in the clean rooms and support environmental testing. Maintain a design log and write build instructions, summarising each step in the design, development test process. Plan test campaigns, conduct manage tests, analyse and present results Management of Work Packages including, detailed project planning, budgeting, report writing, support to design and customer reviews Develop the Bill of Materials to allow the MRP system to reflect the completed instrument PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications A good 1st Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent ideally with Proven related optical or precision mechanical instrument experience Experience Demonstrated experience of the design, build and ideally test of precision mechanical systems, preferably as applied to spacecraft optical payloads. Relevant experience in some or all of the following areas is essential Mounting optical components, lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, detectors etc, kinematic mounting principles Materials properties knowledge and manufacturing processes Mechanical design using 3D CAD ideally solid works Precision Assembly, Integration and test FE analysis Technical report writing and presentation preparation Customer and supplier liaison Quality management and product assurance understanding Experience of mechanical and environmental testing Knowledge Skills Comprehensive knowledge of Mechanical Engineering, ideally applied to optical space applications, coupled with a working knowledge of other engineering disciplines e.g. electronics, electrooptical, systems. Knowledge and experience of other spacecraft systems would be an advantage with the ability to grasp new technical concepts quickly. NIST Optomechanical Transducer links sound, light, radio waves.

Published in Nature Photonics, researchers at NIST developed "piezo-optomechanical circuit" that converts signals among optical, acoustic, and radio waves. According to one of said paper's co-authors, Kartik Srinivasan, this device might enable detailed studies of interactions and foster development of phononic circuitry that can be modified with photons. "This work," said Srinivasan, "presents one platform for transducing information between different carriers."
