Post Young Graduate Trainee for Support to Mars Express Visual Monitoring Camera This post is classified F1. Location ESAC, Villanueva de la Caada, Spain Our team and mission Mars Express is the first European mission to Mars, launched in 2003 and still operational nowadays, the operations being coordinated by the Mars Express Science Ground Segment at ESAC, Madrid. The mission is analysing the planet at all levels from the interior up to the magnetosphere, providing very high resolution images and mineralogy information of the surface, probing the Martian subsurface waterice deposits, monitoring the atmosphere gases and its interaction with the solar wind in the magnetosphere, and even observing regularly the two Martian moons Phobos and Deimos. The Visual Monitoring Camera VMC onboard Mars Express has been used extensively in the last 10 years for outreach purposes, but only recently in 2016 it was upgraded to the status of scientific payload and started to perform scientific observations, with a new international science and technical team coordinated at ESAC in Madrid. These tasks cover the preparation of science observations, maintenance of the new data processing pipelines, support to the final archiving and distribution of the data files to the community as well as support for scientific analysis of the images. Moreover the use of VMC images will be extended to educational purposes, with the preparation of scientific and technical use cases for students worldwide. Additional requirements The following skills would be desirable Programming skills, especially knowledge of IDL andor Python language Experience in science data handling andor image processing Experience with servers and unix operating system Experience in educational and outreach programmes and activities Interest in planetary science The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. In addition, applicants should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
