Apple cuts prices on Macs, takes a jab at PCs

Apple on Tuesday introduced new versions of the MacBook Pro laptops and cut prices, but not before taking a jab at PC makers. The company's MacBook Pro with Retina Display and 13-inch screen starts at $1,299, which is $200 cheaper than the previous model. The 15-inch model will start at $1,999, while the previous-generation laptop was $2,199. The laptops are available now.

For almost as long as there have been Windows laptops, there has always been a giant squid in the room: Why is Windows' battery life so damn pitiful? The battery life discrepancy between Windows and other operating systems has never been clearer than with the Surface Pro 2 and the 2013 MacBook Air -- both have very similar specs (Haswell Core i5 CPU/GPU, battery size), and yet Apple's laptop has almost twice the battery life of Microsoft's tablet.

AMD reports Q3 profit after reducing reliance on PCs

Reduced reliance on the PC market helped Advanced Micro Devices turn a profit in the third quarter, with the company looking for faster growth in the quarters ahead. AMD reported net income of US$48 million for the quarter ended Sept. 28, better than its loss of $157 million in the same quarter last year.

Intel delays Broadwell chips for PCs and hybrids

Intel has delayed production of its "Broadwell" processors due to a manufacturing glitch, something analysts say could postpone the launch of PCs and tablets based on the new chip. Intel ran into some problems with the 14-nanometer process used to manufacture the chips and will have to fix them before it can resume production, CEO Brian Krzanich said during Intel's earnings call on Tuesday.
