Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description Materials Physics and Chemistry Engineer in the Materials Physics and Chemistry Section, Components and Materials Physics and Chemistry Evaluation and Standardisation Division, Product Assurance and Safety Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. The Materials Physics and Chemistry Section provides engineering support to all ESA projects and development programmes in the area of Materials Physics and Chemistry, associated processes and environmental effects. It supports project specific activities in the selection, characterisation, verification, approval and application of metallic and nonmetallic materials processes for ESA programmes with a focus on materials physics and chemistry and environmental effects. Environmental effects covers the ground as well as the space environment. Duties Reporting to the Head of Section and within the technical fields described above, the postholder will perform main tasks and responsibilities which include providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in the area of materials physics chemistry throughout all project phases with a focus on environmental effects providing support to evaluation programmes, nonconformances and failure investigations in this area, associated processes and environmental effects supporting projectspecific activities in the selection, characterisation, verification, approval and application of metallicnonmetallic materials and processes for ESA programmes, focusing on materials physics chemistry and environmental effects supporting the materials and processes control boards for all ESA projects notably by reviewing declared lists and interfacing with all supported projects regarding materials physics chemistry and environmental effects participating in project reviews and evaluations of procurement proposals, identifying critical development problems and assisting with their resolution via e.g. NRBs contributing to the definition and implementation of the strategy plan for technology development for metallicnonmetallic materials and processes and associated roadmaps focusing on materials physics chemistry, associated processes and environmental effects assessing existing and novel materials technologies in this area for future space applications, including advanced exploration missions this includes analysing future mission requirements and preparing appropriate evaluation techniques with a particular focus on, but not limited to, NDINDE techniques developing and implementing new laboratory test methods and materials analysis techniques and procedures in respect of space environmental effects, reporting relevant laboratory activities as required contributing to implementation of the Advanced Manufacturing CrossCutting Initiative and other Agencywide initiatives such as CleanSpace, Space Energy, etc., focusing on materials physics chemistry, associated processes and environmental effects supporting and contributing to the establishment and implementation of requirements, handbooks and standards regarding space materials Q70 series in the field of competence maintaining and developing ESAs competence in materials physics chemistry, associated processes and environmental effects, promoting achievements and concepts through conferences, workshops and training contributing to the dissemination of the results of activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency. Additional requirements Understanding of how materialsassociated processes are affected by the environment groundspace and how test methods are developed to characterise it are required. Familiarity with detailed materials reviews MPCBs, resolution of anomalies NRBs and knowledge of environmental modelling software like SPENVIS is an asset. The work includes support to the engineering and laboratory activities of the Optics Laboratory Optical system requirements specification, design, engineering, manufacturing and verification. Optical component technology, including microoptics, fibre and passive integrated optics. Optical communications. Imaging lidars, laser metrology and ranging. Interferometry and optical aperture synthesis. Spectroradiometric imaging instruments operating in the visible and infrared. Specifically General maintenance and servicing of optical, electro optical and electronics measurement equipment and instrumentation in order to assure that the relevant equipment is in an operational state. General operation and maintenance of the Optics Laboratory cleanroom. Procurement of laboratory materials, optical elements and components, chemicals and consumables. Contribution to the identification, selection and specification of new capital equipment, and execution of the annual laboratory investment plan. Installation and maintenance of computer software and hardware for measurement, data acquisition and analysis. Stock and equipment inventory tracking. Logging of all laboratory activities. Implementation of applicable safety rules and regulations. Maintenance of the procedures accredited under the ISO 17025 Quality Management System, development of new procedures and participation in the annual audits process both internal and external. Planning, settingup and execution of experiments and measurements of optical and Optoelectronics systems, devices and components. Provision of expert advice on optical test and verification methods, use of optical materials, optical design and optical system performance analysis including Straylight issues in support of ESA projects and technology RD activities with industry and academic or research institutes. Analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of optical measurement data and results and provision of formal written reports to the laboratory customers. Ideal candidate The successful candidate will bring a PhD or MSc in experimental physics, optics, optical engineering, as well as experience in these fields, and minimum 4 years of experience in the tasks similar to the ones described above. Additionally, the key person requires Project andor industrial experience in the design, engineering and testing and verification of various types of optical instrumentation. Solid experience in precision optical measurements at system, subassembly and component level. Good technical judgement, analytical and excellent verbal and written communication skills, in the English language. Experience in space project work, and of operations in a cleanroom environment. Knowledge and or experience in the use and application of the ISO 9000 series or ISO 17025 standards for quality management of test laboratories.
