Netflix adds 13 mln subs in 2014, plans global expansion

(Telecompaper) Netflix announced plans to accelerate its international expansion, after adding 13 million new customers in the past year. The company reported growth in the fourth quarter ahead of its outlook, adding 4.33 million new streaming customers for a total 57.39 million. Netflix said it's now profitable in its first markets launched outside the US. It will expand to Australia and Zew Zealand by March and more countries by the end of this year. Already available in 50 countries, Netflix aims to grow to around 200 markets worldwide by 2017, including China. The international expansion and investments in content led to negative free cash flow of USD 78 million in Q4. Netflix still had USD 1.6 billion in cash at year-end and said it aims to raise around USD 1 billion this year in a debt offering. The company's operating profit fell to USD 65 million in Q4 from USD 82 million a year earlier, while net profit rose to USD 83 million from USD 48 million, helped by a one-time tax gain of USD 39 million.

FCC fines Viacom, ESPN USD 1.4 mln for misusing EAS tones

(Telecompaper) The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has fined Viacom and ESPN USD 1.4 million for misusing the Emergency Alert System (EAS) warning tones. The cable networks transmitted EAS warning tones for several days in 2013 to promote the movie "Olympus Has Fallen," which portrayed a terrorist attack on Washington DC. Broadcast or transmission of these tones outside an emergency or test violates the FCC's laws protecting the integrity of the system.
France leads in global hotspots with over 13 mln

(Telecompaper) iPass announced a new milestone in public Wi-Fi, with over 50 million hotspots available worldwide, up by 80 percent since 2013. As an enhancement to its Wi-Fi Growth Map, a real-time assessment of global Wi-Fi, iPass also unveiled the Wi-Fi Leaderboard, a scorecard that ranks countries based on the number of hotspots they have overall, as well where they stand with Wi-Fi availability in categories like in-flight and hotels. The leaderboard shows that France with over 13 million hotspots holds the top spot, followed by the US with 9.8 million and the UK at 5.6 million. The US is expected to jump ahead to more than 32 million total hotspots by the end of 2015 and surpass France. Overall, iPass predicts the number of hotspots to hit 340 million worldwide by 2018. Maravedis Rethink conducted the research and analysis behind the creation of the iPass Growth Map. The same research provides the basis for the iPass Wi-Fi leaderboard.

TPG leads $186 mln round for Lynda.com

Leading online learning company lynda.com, Inc. today announced an investment of $186 million led by TPG, a global private investment firm with $65 billion of assets under management. Accel Partners, Spectrum Equity and Meritech, existing lynda.com investors, also participated in the round.
