(Telecompaper) UK operator New Call Telecom has acquired a 70 percent stake in mobile messaging service provider Nimbuzz for USD 175 million. "We see huge potential for new revenue streams and very large expansion of broadband in India through this", Jerome Booth, New Call chairman told The Economic Times. Following the completion of the acquisition, Nimbuzz will become a unit of New Call Telecom and will continue to be headed by Nimbuzz CEO Vikas Saxena.
Twitter revenues surge 114% to USD 361 mln in Q3

(Telecompaper) Twitter said third quarter revenues soared 114 percent from the year before to USD 361 million, higher than the company's forecast of USD 330-340 million. The net loss meanwhile widened to 175.4 million from a loss the year earlier of 64.6 million, with the diluted net loss per share narrowing to 0.29 from a loss of 0.48 and the EBITDA rising to 68.3 million from 9.2 million. Twitter's user base grew 23 percent to 284 million monthly active users, with mobile accounting for 80 percent of users and 85 percent of revenues. Timeline views reached 181 billion, up 14 percent from the year before, with advertising revenue per thousand timeline views up 83 percent to USD 1.77. For the fourth quarter, the company is guiding for revenue of USD 440-450 million and adjusted EBITDA of USD 100-105 million. The group raised its full year outlook for revenues at USD 1.365-1.375 billion and adjusted EBITDA of USD 260-265 million.
Another hedge fund sues Argentina for u$s835 mln in defaulted bonds

EM Limited, a hedge fund owned by billionaire Kenneth Dart, has presented a lawsuit against Argentina before New York district judge Thomas Griesa, for u$s835 million in defaulted bonds. With the initiative, the hedge fund aims at getting a similar sentence as the one issued by Griesa for NML Capital, owned by fellow billionaire Paul Singer.

Huawei smartphone shipments up 26% in Q3 to 16.8 mln

(Telecompaper) Huawei Technologies said its third-quarter smartphone shipments jumped 26 percent year-on-year to 16.8 million worldwide. About a quarter of those were mid- to high-end models, more than twice as many as the same period last year. "We are breaking our bottlenecks of mid- to high-end models step by step, especially in overseas markets," Huawei consumer business group marketing executive Shao Yang told Reuters in an interview. To further expand in the high end of the market, Huawei plans to increase its global marketing budget at least 30 percent in 2015, compared with USD 440 million this year, he said. The company has shipped 51 million smartphones globally in the first three quarters of 2014, about 63.8 percent of its annual shipment target of 80 million. Shao said he expected quarter-on-quarter shipments growth of up to 80 percent in the fourth quarter. A little more than half of Huawei's smartphone shipments went to China in the third quarter. Elsewhere, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific recorded the strongest growth.
