(Telecompaper) Global shipments of branded tablets, excluding e-readers and convertible PCs, rose 117 percent to 40.6 million units in the first quarter, compared to 18.7 million in the year-earlier period, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple shipped 19.5 million iPads, compared to 11.8 million in the first quarter of 2012, maintaining its market share leadership with 48.2 percent in the first quarter, compared to 63.1 percent in the year-earlier first quarter. Shipments of branded tablets running Android rose to 17.6 million units (43.4 percent share) from 6.4 million units (34.2%). Windows tablet shipments reached 3 million units for a 7.5 percent market share in the first quarter. There were no Windows tablets a year ago. Microsoft's tablet shipments are being held back by very limited distribution, a shortage of top-tier apps and market confusion, according to the market researcher. Including white box tablets, Android had a 52 percent share of all tablets shipped, ahead of Apple with 41 percent.
LG doubles smartphone shipments to 10.3 mln in Q1
2013-04-24 09:01:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) LG Electronics reported a drop in first-quarter profits, as a strong improvement at its mobile phone activities was offset by weakness at the home entertainment division. Operating profit fell to KRW 350 billion from KRW 402 billion a year ago, and net profit dropped to KRW 22 billion from KRW 248 billion, hurt also by weaker results at LG Display. Revenues were still up 6.8 percent year-over-year to KRW 14.10 trillion, mainly due to the improved performance of the mobile business. Mobile revenues rose 28.6 percent from a year earlier and 14.2 percent from Q4 to KRW 3.21 trillion. Operating profit at the division rose to KRW 133 billion from KRW 35 billion a year ago. LG said it shipped 10.3 million smartphones in the quarter, more than double the amount in the year-ago period and 20 percent more than in Q4. Growth was led by its premium LTE phones such as the Optimus G, as well as the new L series phones and Google Nexus 4. LG said it expects further growth in the smartphones market, particularly in LTE, but competition will intensify as well. In the coming quarter, it aims to increase shipments with the global launch of the Optimus G Pro and full launches of the LTE F series and 3G L series II targeted at the mid to low-end segment, while also focusing on cost control.

Netflix adds 3 mln new subscribers in Q1
2013-04-23 09:14:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Netflix passed USD 1 billion in quarterly sales for the first time in the first quarter. The VoD service recorded sales of USD 1.02 billion, versus 870 million a year earlier, and moved to an operating profit of USD 32 million versus a loss of USD 2 million. Net profit came in at USD 3 million, below its forecast for a flat result versus Q4's USD 8 million, due to one-time costs for paying off debt. Free cash flow was better than expected, at a negative USD 42 million versus USD 51 million last quarter. Netflix earlier said it expected cash burn to increase sequentially due to costs for creating original programming. Subscribers numbers were in line with the company's outlook, with the US base up by 2.03 million in the three months to 29.12 million and international customers up by 1.02 million to a total 7.14 million. The international activities generated a loss of USD 77 million, and this is expected to continue in Q2 due to content spending. Netflix said it plans to launch an additional European market during the second half of 2013.
