MTS to sell Allstream to Accelero for CAD 520 mln

(Telecompaper) Canadian operator Manitoba Telecom Services announced the conclusion of its strategic review to consider alternatives for its unit Allstream. Following an auction process and review of other strategic alternatives, the company has signed a binding agreement to sell Allstream to Accelero Capital Holdings Group, and investment and management group focused on telecommunications, digital media and technology. The transaction values Allstream at CAD 520 million, subject to certain customary adjustments, including assumed debt obligations and normalised working capital, as well as certain pension related obligations. The transaction has been approved by the MTS board of directors and is expected to close in the second half of 2013, subject to regulatory approval.
Samsung Galaxy S4 sales exceed 10 mln

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics has seen sales of its Galaxy S4 smartphone exceed 10 million units globally. The milestone happened 20 days earlier than its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. The Galaxy S4 was launched on 27 April in some 60 countries and has since expanded to over 110 countries. Samsung plans to increase to this to 155 countries by the end of June. In addition to the two existing colours of white or black, it will introduce new models of the S4 this summer in blue, red, purple and brown.

Greece - Cristal Union pays EUR40 mln for Hellenic Sugar

Cristal Union of France is the successful bidder for a majority share in the Hellenic Sugar Industry (HSI). In April the Agriculture Bank of Greece announced the agreement to transfer more than 30 mln common shares to Cristal Financire, a subsidiary of the French Sugar Cooperative. Cristal Union had offered a principal of EUR40 mln for the stake. KSC of Poland and Litex Commerce of Bulgaria have been selected as \"stand by\" candidates, pending final approval of the sale.
Smart mobile device shipments top 300 mln in Q1

(Telecompaper) Total smart mobile device (notebook, tablet and smart phone) shipments for this year's first quarter exceeded 308.7 million units, according to a report from Canalys. This represents year-on-year growth of 37.4 percent. The report also shows that, in terms of OS vendors, the Open Handset Alliance continues to dominate, with Android the OS of choice on 59.5 percent of all smart mobile devices shipped.
Zain adds 1.4 mln new customers in Q1

(Telecompaper) Middle East mobile operator Zain Group recorded revenues of USD 1.06 billion and EBITDA of USD 449 million for the first quarter. Comparative figures were not provided. Net profit reached USD 184 million, a 3 percent increase on the fourth quarter of 2012. Zain said adverse currency effects in Sudan cost the company the equivalent of USD 179 million in revenues, USD 76 million in EBITDA and USD 44 million in net profit for the quarter. The group added 3.9 million new active customers over the past 12 months and 1.4 million in the first quarter alone, for a total 44.1 million at the end of March. Zain said that all group companies were performing well in local currency terms, and despite intense competitive challenges, attaining the targets set at the beginning of the year.
