Microsoft fined EUR 561 mln over browser choice in EU

2013-03-06 13:17:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Microsoft has received a EUR 561 million fine from the European Commission for failure to implement an agreement to offer a choice of web browsers with its Windows operating system. The EC warned Microsoft last year already that it was considering a fine for not implementing the agreement from 2009. Microsoft acknowledged in July 2012 that the choice screen was not displayed due to a technical error. The commitment to offer a choice of browser was made legally binding on Microsoft until 2014, after it was found to be abusing its dominant market position by making Internet Explorer the default browser with Windows. The latest fine applies to the lack of browser choice with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from May 2011 until July 2012, the result of which was that 15 million Windows users in the EU did not see the required choice screen, the EC said. This is the first time that the commission has fined a company for non-compliance with a commitments decision. In the calculation of the fine the EC said it took into account the gravity and duration of the infringement, the need to ensure a deterrent effect of the fine and, as a mitigating circumstance, the fact that Microsoft has cooperated with the commission's investigation.

(Telecompaper) Headphones company Beats Electronics has raised USD 60 million from Len Blavatnik, James Packer and other investors to spin off a music subscription business which is using the working name "Daisy", reports the Financial Times. Beats recently purchased digital music service MOG and hired Topspin Media founder Ian Rogers as CEO. Its chief creative officer is Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. Beats intends to launch its music subscription later this year, Blavatnik said. Beats has also held talks with Apple executives about a possible partnership with Daisy, Reuters reported. Apple CEO Tim Cook and the company's head of internet products, Eddy Cue, met Iovine in late February to find out more about Project Daisy, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Cook expressed interest in Daisy's rollout plans and business model, but did not discuss specifics of a deal. Although Beats would not comment on the meeting with Apple, a spokesman told the Financial Times that Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine has had a long relationship with the group.

Sky to buy O2 fixed broadband business for GBP 180 mln

2013-03-01 08:35:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) BSkyB has agreed to acquire O2 UK's fixed broadband business from Telefonica for GBP 180 million. The acquisition of the over half a million broadband customers under the O2 and Be brands will make Sky the UK's second-largest ISP, while the sale of its fixed-line activities will allow O2 to focus on expanding its mobile broadband network, including the launch of 4G. O2 has been losing fixed broadband customers steadily for two years and finished 2012 with a total 560,100. Its 377,400 fixed telephony customers will also transfer to Sky. Upon successful completion of the customer migration process by Telefonica UK, Sky has agreed to pay an extra GBP 20 million. O2 and Be customers will be migrated to Sky's own unbundled network. The sale is expected to close in April, pending regulatory approval.
