Tivo to receive USD 490 mln from Cisco, Google

(Telecompaper) Tivo confirmed it has settled its pending patent litigation with Motorola, Cisco and Time Warner Cable. It also agreed to reach patent licensing arrangements with Arris (which has since acquired Motorola's set-top box business), Cisco and Google (the former owner of the Motorola assets). As part of the settlement, Google and Cisco will pay Tivo an upfront lump-sum payment of USD 490 million. This brings the total from awards and settlements raised by Tivo in intellectual property lawsuits to roughly USD 1.6 billion. As part of the settlement, Tivo and Motorola, Cisco, and Time Warner Cable agreed to dismiss all pending litigation between the companies.

Dutch broadband lines grow to 6.65 mln, revenues up 3.4%

(Telecompaper) The Dutch broadband market rose 0.6 percent, or by 37,400 net additions, in the first quarter to 6.65 million connections, according to Telecompaper's quarterly broadband report. DSL's 1.1 percent quarterly decrease was offset by cable growing 1 percent during the quarter and FTTH/B growing almost 6 percent. DSL is still the largest broadband technology with 3.14 million lines, with cable catching up with 2.99 million lines. FTTH/B had a market share of 7.8 percent at the end of Q1. Telecompaper estimates that consumer broadband retail revenues lifted 3.4 percent in Q1 to EUR 478 million.

Vale wants Thyssen to reimburse it, CSA for $550 mln in extra costs -report

Vale SA wants ThyssenKrupp AG to partially reimburse it for some of the $550 million in extra costs that their CSA slabmaking partnership in Brazil incurred over the past four years, adding a potential hurdle to the sale of the money-losing steel mill, O Estado de S. Paulo said on Wednesday.

Samsung sells more than 10 mln smartphones in China in Q1

Samsung Electronics Co. has sold more than 10 million smartphones in China in the first three months of this year, retaining its position as the top smartphone seller in the world's most populous country for the fifth straight quarter, data showed Monday.
