Job description For our customer, EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking an experienced System Operations Support Engineer Mission Performance Team. You will be responsible for supporting EUMETSATs operational systems focusing on realtime, endtoend mission operations and the supporting and monitoring systems. Your tasks will be related to Event Monitoring GEMS, system endtoend monitoring SMART, user notification system UNSUMS, system monitoring NAGIOS, GMC, system monitoring infrastructure MASIF, as well as to support of coordination and management of the overall system performance monitoring. You will be involved in routine operations phases of the current GEO MTP, MSG and LEO EPS, Sentinel3 and Jason missions and you will also support the preparation of future missions, including MTG, EPSSG and Sentinel6 JasonCS. Responsibilities Typical activities to be undertaken are System operations in a realtime operations environment Endtoend operations monitoring User messaging systems configuration and operation Configuration of event monitoring and endtoend monitoring systems Monitoring infrastructure configuration and operation Multimission element and infrastructure operations Mission Performance System Evolutions for existing and new programmes, in particular for EPSSG and JasonCS Executing all tasks related to support to the routine operation of the LEO GEO ground segments and their evolution including new programmes and system operations Definition andor maintenance of the routine operations procedures pertaining to mission performance operations and the interfaces of the key systems within the ground segment Redesign and evolution of the mission performance systems for existing and new programmes Acquiring and maintaining a Systemwide view of the MSG System, and the EPS CGS and OGS, particularly in the areas of system endto end monitoring control and data flows Review of planned changes to the mission performance system configurations for LEO and GEO ground segments, and support to the investigation of anomalies encountered through the routine system and ground segment operations Support to the development and operations preparation for recurrent satellites in existing operational programmes e.g. MetopC and MSG4, and for future operational programmes now in development including Sentinel3, MTG and EPSSG Interfacing with project teams on the implementation of system upgrades to support major operations projects, including System Mid Term Evolution Plan, recurrent satellites, and any System hardware and operating system obsolescence upgrade Performing the following routine operations tasks Definition, configuration and maintenance of endtoend monitoring and reporting systems Definition and maintenance of system operations procedures, including system and ground segment procedures and operations guides Liaison with the spacecraft operations team to ensure the continuity and optimisation of spacecraft monitoring and control activities Liaison with the ground segment facility operations teams and system operations analysts to ensure the continuity and optimisation of ground segment and mission operations through procedure and operations guide updates, configuration changes, database or user interface changes etc. Support to the definition of Operations Service Specifications Interface with the systems maintenance teams and industry representatives to ensure optimised performance, including participating in the definition and implementation of any changes to the mission performance systems Support to operational ground segment analyses Standbyoncall support as system operations engineer, on an as needed basis. This will be coordinated through the normal oncall process Support, as required, to critical operations Processing of mission performance related system anomalies, their documentation, investigation, classification and resolutionmitigation, including participation in Anomaly Review Boards Participation in technical meetings, formal reviews, and scheduling and planning meetings Processing of system modifications, including their documentation, approval, and implementation, including participation in Change Review Boards Support to, and participation in, the functional verification and operational validation of mission performance system upgrades and evolutions, both standalone and in the context of an overall ground segment Liaison with various department and divisions within EUMETSAT CM, QA, Management, Product Experts, User Services Provision of training, through written materials, practical demonstrations and presentations, to other members of the Operations Team This is a fulltime position with the planned start ASAP. You will be nominally based at EUMETSATs facilities in Darmstadt, Germany, but shall be in a position to travel within Europe. Qualifications Competencies Applicants shall have an university degree, in the domain of engineering, science, or other suitable qualification. Essential skills are At least 5 years experience of endtoend system operations in a real time spacecraft operations environment At least 3 years experience in the operations preparation and routine operations of Geostationary GEO and Low Earth Orbit LEO satellite systems At least 3 years work experience in the operation and configuration of endtoend monitoring and reporting systems for Earth Observation data processing ground segments At least 3 years experience in the definition, development, integration and acceptance testing of mission data monitoring systems At least 3 years work experience defining and implementing the verification and validation of ground segment systems Excellent written and oral English skills The following experience would be an additional asset Experience of procurement phases for new programmes. Directorate of Science and Robotic Exploration The European Space Agency is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from women POST Operations Team Leader in the Mission Operations Division, Operations Department, Directorate of Science and Robotic Exploration, with initial assignment to Gaia. This post is classified in the A2A4 grade band of the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. LOCATION ESAC, Villanueva de la Caada, Madrid Spain. DUTIES During its 5year lifetime, Gaia will conduct an allsky survey yielding more than 100 TB of raw observation data from which an astrometric catalogue of 1 billion celestial objects will be generated. The complex data processing and catalogue creation is carried out by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC of which the ESAC Science Operations Centre is an integral part. It plays a central role in defining the overall system architecture of the Science Ground Segment and developing and executing parts of the core data reduction systems. This includes operation of the socalled daily processing chain and the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution. ESAC also forms the hub for all data exchanges among the six DPAC Data Processing Centres DPCs. The postholder will report to the Gaia Science Operations Manager and will be responsible for overseeing and managing all the daytoday operations of the data processing systems at DPCESAC, notably the daily processing chain, the reliable creation of standard initial data products and their daily dissemination to other Gaia processing centres. In addition, specific tasks will include leading a small team of operators and system testers planning, coordinating and supervising all activities related to the testing, integration, and deployment of all operational systems participating in the optimisation of operational software processing systems acting as manager of DPCESAC for DPAC, including reporting duties and liaising with relevant external partners as needed devising, implementing, monitoring and optimising operational procedures as needed applying and optimising QA rules and practices, following ECCS standards where applicable and taking into account and feeding back to corresponding efforts at Division and Department level including lessons learned process. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree in a mathematical andor physical discipline and a strong background in ITcomputer science. Extensive experience in the field of science operations including operations of large, complex science data processing systems, preferably in the context of ESA missions, is required. Experience and knowledge of Gaia science operations is a distinct advantage. Good communication skills are required to effectively lead the operations team and report to and liaise with external partners as needed. Candidates should have experience of managing small teams. They should have good analytical and organisational skills, and a proactive attitude towards solving problems. They should have good interpersonal skills along with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. For behavioural competencies expected from ESA staff, please refer to the ESA Competency Framework. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these languages is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. Knowledge of another member state language is an asset.
