1TB per disc: Sony and Panasonic team up on next-gen Blu-ray

2014-03-10 16:44:50| Extremetech

Electronic storage has been moving away from discs for quite some time. Music is kept on our phones rather than in giant CD books that get left in the car, important documents are kept on the cloud, and flash drives and cards are becoming ever cheaper and much larger in size. Even video games -- the last bastion of optical media -- have been moving toward the cloud. However, games arguably benefit the most from increased storage, and that's why Sony and Panasonic's new 300GB disc is extremely promising for the future of gaming.

AIA: NextGen Program to Face Challenges Under President's FY15 Budget

2014-03-04 05:00:00| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Responding to President Obama's fiscal year 2015 budget request, AIA's Marion C. Blakey brought up FAA programs facing challenges. She noted Next Generation Air Transportation System modernization program, saying funding cuts pose new obstacles to meeting milestones. "The economic benefits of the NextGen program far outweigh the nominal budget gains that would be realized if the proposed cuts are enacted," said Blakey who also cited risks to safety, environment, and U.S. competitiveness. Secrets of Steamroller: Digging deep into AMDs next-gen core

2014-03-03 18:01:30| Extremetech

AMD's Steamroller core, found in Kaveri APUs, is an interesting duck. It's the first chip to ship with HSA support, the first CPU core that can be paired with a GCN-based graphics core, and it promised significant improvements in performance-per-clock that were then largely offset by a lower clock speed. Our investigation shows that the situation isn't that simple, however -- there are some areas, particularly on the APU side of the equation, where Steamroller is far better than its predecessor. This article is a low-level investigation into where the chip improved, where it fell short, and what AMD might do going forward.
