JOB DESCRIPTION Responsibilities Duties Tasks This work package is intended to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA covering activities of Community Support Scientists, Instrument Operations Engineers andor Instrument Scientists in the following areas Assist users with the preparation of scientific observations and assist the Project Scientist and the committees with the selection of the best scientific programme to be performed, Assist users with the data products retrieved from missions so that the best science possible can be obtained, Prepare long, medium and shortterm mission plans and schedules. Interact with users mainly via helpdesk in the parameter tuning and maintenance of their observational programmes as mission conditions and knowledge evolve, and in the understanding, analysis and interpretation of the science observation data. Assist in the understanding of the missions instruments and their data. Produce and maintain user support documentation and answer helpdesk questions on instrument operations and data products associated with the instruments. Organise and participate in data processing workshops and work with users in understanding how to handle science data, Organise scientific workshops upon request, Monitor instrument performance. Qualifications Ph.D. degree in a relevant science area, with preference for astronomy or physics. Required knowledge Strong background in astronomical research, with a good record of science publications in the astronomical refereed literature and with part of those signed by the candidate as first author. A few years working in research institutes or universities at postdoctoral level, with an active research programme, preferably aligned with the scientific capabilities of XMMNewton Astronomical Xray data analysis Astronomical spectroscopic data analysis Good command of commonly used astronomical software, like IDL, and of Xray astronomical data analysis software in particular, with preference to the XMMNewton SAS and the XSPEC and FTOOLs. Desirable Knowledge Very good knowledge of the XMMNewton instruments, strongly preferred Monitoring and calibration of astronomical Xray detectors Monitoring and calibration of opticalUV detectors used in space astronomy Calibration of astronomical spectroscopic data Scientific or spacecraft operations support with a major international space or ground based observatory Support to the professional astronomical community, with preference for the astronomers using spacebased missions Interactive analysis and pipeline processing of astronomical Xray data Use of scientific data in support of science research, with preference for Xray and spacebased data. Qualifications and Requirements Knowledge of astronomical instrumentation, acquired through astronomical instrument hardware development andor intensive astronomical data reduction exercise Experience and understanding of farinfrared instruments is a distinct advantage Experience in interacting with the scientific community An interest in performing science research with the mission data is considered a plus.
