New research shows just how much better recycled paper for forests

2015-10-14 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mongabay: The analysis revealed that the recycled paper had less than one percent of the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change and ocean acidification as the virgin paper, while using one-fourth of the water. The harvesting of the wood fed into just one of the virgin paper mills disturbed the habitat for 115 different endangered species. Virgin paper makers are attempting to rebrand their product as just as climate-friendly as recycled paper, while better suited to fine printing...

Rapid and startling decline of worlds vast boreal forests

2015-10-13 15:15:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Yale Environment 360: The boreal forest wraps around the globe at the top of the Northern Hemisphere in North America and Eurasia. Also known as taiga or snow forest, this landscape is characterized by its long, cold and snowy winters. In North America it extends from the Arctic Circle of northern Canada and Alaska down into the very northern tip of the United States in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Minnesota. It's the planet's single largest biome and makes up 30 percent of the globe's forest cover. Moose are the...

Climbing plants disturb carbon storage in tropical forests

2015-10-13 12:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld

[NEWS] Scientists have discovered that climbing vines are upsetting the carbon balance of tropical forests by crowding out and killing trees. Rainforests play a vital role in the global carbon cycle. We depend on the trees found in these tropical areas to take up some of the carbon dioxide that we are emitting, so not all of our emissions end up in the atmosphere. In a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and led by Dr Geertje van …

In fight to stop climate change, forests are vital weapon

2015-10-06 12:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: Forests are undervalued assets in meeting the twin global challenges of our time: achieving prosperity and safeguarding climate stability. Its time we gave them the attention and finance that they deserve. Last week, dozens of countries announced a late-breaking wave of commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions ahead of the climate change summit in Paris this November. While such pledges are welcome, they are not yet sufficient to avert catastrophic global warming. Tropical forests provide...

A new global tinderbox: Worlds northern forests

2015-10-02 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Yale Environment 360: Ted Schuur has spent the better part of his career making the connection between climate change and wildfires that are burning an increasing amount of land in Alaska and in sub-Arctic and Arctic forests around the world. So the Northern Arizona University scientist wasnt all that surprised this summer to find his field stations in the interior of Alaska Alaska Fire Service Alaska experienced its second-worst fire season in recorded history this summer. surrounded by fires on three sides. At the...
