South Carolina's public health department has asked federal officials to evaluate both the agency's response to an E. coli outbreak that killed one child at a Greenwood day care facility and its infectious disease programs overall. Department of Health and Environmental Control director Catherine Heigel said Friday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has agreed to review how it handled the outbreak at The Learning Vine earlier this year.

E. coli testing begins at Traverse City-area beaches

More Grand Traverse-area beaches will be tested for the bacteria E. coli this summer to ensure they are healthy for swimmers. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that the Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay received almost $29,500 from the state Department of Environmental Quality for weekly testing at local beaches, and more funding to expand to some inland lakes.

Boise a Idaho officials are advising against swimming or wading at Robie Creek Beach at Lucky Peak Reservoir in southwest Idaho due to bacteria that can cause illness.
