Baytril FDA approved for control of E. coli in swine

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved changes in the label claims for Baytril 100 (enrofloxacin). The drug may now be used intramuscularly or subcutaneously for the control of colibacillosis in groups of swine where E. coli has been diagnosed. This is in addition to the previous indication for treatment and control of swine respiratory disease. [Source: FDA and Bayer] read more

MIT can now use E. coli DNA tape recorders for living and replicating data storage

2014-11-17 21:13:36| Extremetech

Cold hard storage capacity like that is great, but what if that kind of power could be integrated with something more alive -- something like a single cell, or for that matter, integrated into every cell. Researchers at MIT's Synthetic Biology Center have just succeeded writing multiple analog streams of real-time environmental data into the genetically transformed hardware of a distributed population of bacterial cells. Living, breathing computers like this are a tremendous advance over the simple encoding of arbitrary digital data with DNA microchips.

Doctors: Finding source unlikely in E. coli deaths

2014-09-13 08:38:02| Trucking - Topix.net

Investigators say they don't expect to find the specific sources of fatal strains of E. coli that killed two children in the Pacific Northwest and left a Washington boy fighting for his life. Dr. Paul Cieslak, medical director of the communicable disease section of the Oregon Health Authority, said Thursday they need at least twice as many cases to pin down a source, which might be tainted food, lake water, or contact with livestock.
