Last week in telecoms: index down 2.5% as M&A continues

(Telecompaper) The Telecompaper stock index of European telecoms shares was down 2.5 percent in week 51, underperforming the general market as per the EuroStoxx 50 index, which closed off 0.7 percent. Significant news items came in from the M&A market and Spain. Of the 73 shares in our basket just 18 are up for the year.

(Telecompaper) Last week was the the year's best so far for the European telecoms sector. Our index was up 4.0 percent, outperforming the EuroStoxx 50 index (+2.5%) and reversing much of the previous week's losses. The year-to-date performance of our index (-11%) and its benchmark (-8.3%) have come closer together. There was a record number of eights stocks making double digit gains. Earnings reports were generally welcomed, except those coming out of the satellite sector. BT made a 15 percent jump on regulatory developments. The western and southern European players faired quite well, with just two exceptions.
