Oil giant Chevron is cutting 500 jobs from its headquarters in San Ramon as part of a global effort to slash costs by $1 billion, according to a spokeswoman for the company. "These initiatives, which are currently underway, are focused on increasing efficiency, reducing costs and focusing on work that directly supports business priorities," spokeswoman Melissa Ritchie said.

The jobs, in the oil giant's human resources department, are non-union and currently are based at the Chevron Park campus, at 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road, the company said. "Please note that the vast majority of our Bay Area employees are outside the scope of this activity and that our intention is for San Ramon to remain home to our corporate headquarters," wrote Jeff Swindel, a public affairs manager, in a letter last month to Stephen Baiter, executive director of the Contra Costa County Workforce Development Board.
