Micromax to start selling smartphones in China in 2017

(Telecompaper) Indian mobile phone manufacturer Micromax Informatics plans to start selling handsets in China in 2017. The company also intends to public in two years. Micromax wants to become the world's 5th largest smartphone maker by number of phones sold by 2020. To achieve that, it needs to access Chinese customers and raise more cash from a public offering or private investors, The WSJ reports, citing Micromax co-founder Vikas Jain.

MediaTek unveils fast battery charging for smartphones

(Telecompaper) MediaTek launched Pump Express 3.0, its fastest battery charging technology to date which can charge a smartphone battery from zero to 70 percent in as little as 20 minutes. With Pump Express 3.0, end-users can charge for five minutes and talk for four hours, the company said. MediaTek Pump Express 3.0 technology will be available in the MediaTek Helio series P20 with devices expected to be in the market by end of 2016. It will also be available in future smartphone chipsets and can be added to MediaTek smartphone SoCs upon request by customers.

Microsoft cuts more jobs in smartphones as focus narrows

(Telecompaper) Microsoft announced plans to cut another 1,850 jobs at its smartphone business, as it narrows the focus to the enterprise market. After earlier agreeing to sell its feature phone business, the company is now focusing its phone efforts on where it has "differentiation with enterprises that value security, manageability and our Continuum capability, and consumers who value the same," said CEO Staya Nadella. The restructuring and writedown of assets will lead to charges of USD 950 million in its latest quarter, including around USD 200 million for severance payments.
