Space Flight Dynamics Engineer for Copernicus

The CS group, together with its German subsidiary, is a European leader in the area of astrodynamics and of flight dynamics. In order to strengthen our European development even further we are looking to enhance our team of Flight Dynamic specialists based in ESOC Darmstadt. The key person will join our Flight Dynamics team supporting on a daily basis our customer ESAESOC. The ESOC Flight Dynamics division provides mission analysis and flight dynamics operations support to ESA and third party missions during all mission phases. Flight Dynamics cooperates with different elements of the ground segment, such as the flight control teams, ground operations teams, science teams, the projects teams and the spacecraft manufacturers. More specifically, the selected key person will primarily support the Flight Dynamics operations for the Sentinel missions of the EU Copernicus programme. The dedicated Copernicus Flight Dynamics team is responsible for the flying missions of Sentinel1AB, Sentinel2AB and Sentinel5p, as well as for the launch campaigns of their successor missions and of Sentinel3 and Sentinel6. Besides the multimission support, the position offers a diversified working field due to the wide spread responsibilities of each team member and various interfaces inside and outside the team. As the solely working language is English, fluency in English is essential. We are looking for a skilled professional who has already gained experience with Flight Dynamics operations. Tasks Responsibilities The key person will join a team responsible for the following tasks Orbit determination and maneuver optimization Attitude determination and onboard systems monitoring and verification AOCS command generation AOCS and optical sensors calibration Test Validation for the above Performing studies and technical analyses to support the above You will work on Routine mission operations Prelaunch activities, like software development and testing, procedure writing, technical analyses, support to test and simulation campaigns Support during critical mission phases e.g. launch and commissioning, end of mission activities Support of collision avoidance maneuvers with space debris including oncall service Maintenance and evolution of the flight dynamics system. Profile Mandatory skills University degree in a relevant engineering field, astronomy, mathematics or physics Very good skills in linear algebra, in particular for problem solving related to geometry in the Euclidean 3dimensional space Being familiar with different representations of rotation in 3D, thus including the representation of SC attitude cosine direction matrix, Euler symmetric parameters quaternions, Eulerangles ... is an asset Very good skills in calculus in one or several variables Very good skills in classical mechanics, including kinematics and dynamics of point masses, dynamics of rigid bodies, dynamics expressed in noninertial reference frames, e.g. including dynamics in rotating frames, rotation dynamics expressed in body fixed frame, conservation laws in mechanics, gravitational forces and field, orbit dynamics, Keplerian orbits and Kepler laws. Key Tasks and Responsibilities As a member of a team providing services to ESOC you will be providing support for Attitude Determination for Science Missions Generation of routine attitude products for all interplanetary and Lagrangian missions in routine operations, including e.g. Mars Express, ExoMars TGO and GAIA Analysis of the state of the spacecraft for the above missions, including detailed analysis of any suspicious telemetry Live telemetry monitoring for interplanetary missions in critical phases e.g. planetary approach, planetary swingby Generation of calibrations of AOCS units. Detailed analysis of anomalies or anomalous behavior FD systems development and maintenance Design, implementation, extension and modification of attitude determination tools e.g. telemetry processing and product generation software, as required. Implementation of auxiliary tools and scripts in support of attitude determination tasks Review of the satellites documentation and its application to FD procedures. Participation in the associated formal review process Launch preparation Integration of the FD attitude tools in the operational platform including the generation of missionspecific procedures. Testing of tools at unit, subsystem and system level. Participation and support to FD system tests. Participation and support to FD system initialization. Participation and support to ESOCwide simulations. Support to mission readiness tests with the mission control system LEOP support in the attitude determination domain JUICE, RSP and EUCLID Setup of FD Attitude subsystem for LEOP support, live telemetry monitoring and assessment of spacecraft performance. Generation of attitude products. Calibration of sensors Oncall support may be required also during LEOP periods and for critical operations.
