Airbus Defence and Space is a division of Airbus Group formed by combining the business activities of Cassidian, Astrium and Airbus Military. It employs some 40,000 employees generating revenues of approximately 14 billion per year. A vacancy for a Field Service Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence Space. This role can be based either in Oakhanger or Hawthorn. The successful applicant will join the Maritime Field Service Team MFS. The MFS team is responsible for the provision of through life support, installation, integration, commissioning, modifications and upgrade activities across a portfolio of Airbus Defence and Space assets and customer sites. as applicable. The Field Service Engineer will typically engage directly with the customer or their representative to ensure that all Airbus installed assets are implemented and maintained at optimum cost and to exacting engineering standards. As well as team working you will also be expected to provide individual technical support via an oncall rota and you must be prepared to travel at short notice to worldwide locations. The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Provision of through life maintenance and engineering support to satellite communications systems and terminals at ground stations, tactical antennas and onboard military maritime vessels under contract to Airbus. Provision of specialist 247 oncall system support on a rotational basis within a team. Provide an escalation point from Operations and take ownership of ongoing fault investigations on Skynet 5, YAHSAT and associated military remote assets. Onsite management supervision of installation work, system test and commissioning on data comms, RF and mechanical systems and equipment. Provide Technical assistance and support to the Customer Service Group Help desk, both by telephone support and site visits as appropriate. Commissioning and testing of Satellite systems of varying frequencies from C band up to Ka Band, at fixed ground stations as well as VSat, mobile terminals, and Naval systems. Commissioning of Antenna tracking systems on both large Ground Station Antennas and smaller mobile Antennas in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Assist and support the Field Service Team Manager to define technical requirements relating to the provision of TSD support within future projects. This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Essential Skills HNCHND in Engineering, Electronics, Data Communications or similar. CCNA qualification An ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience of TCPIP protocols and technologies. Proven experience in the Defence andor Maritime industry. Knowledge of Satellite communications and Networks. Ability to successfully engage with internal technical and operations teams, external customers and stakeholders. Proactive and autonomous, you should be a team player with good report writing, communication skills and attention to detail. Must be analytical with a structured and diagnostic approach towards technical problem solving. Desirable Skills Experience in an IP support environment. Knowledge of IP and Serial encryption devices. Knowledge of Servers, OS and applications. Knowledge of ATM, and Nortel Passport. Knowledge of X21, RS530 and serial communications protocols. Alibaba launches Disney streaming service in China

(Telecompaper) Alibaba Group and Walt Disney Co have struck a deal to sell a new smart device for the home that will bring Disney's movies, TV series and games to Chinese consumers. Pre-sales of the Mickey Mouse-themed device, which connects TVs to the internet and costs CNY 799 (USD 125), have started on Alibaba's online marketplace Tmall.com. The price includes a one-year subscription to the DisneyLife streaming on-demand service. Users will get access to feature films such as "Frozen" and "Toy Story," along with animated series such as "My Friends Tigger and Pooh" and "Little Einsteins." DisneyLife will also offer games, e-books and travel services for trips to Disneyland in Hong Kong and Shanghai. All of the content included in the agreement is offered in China through Wasu Media, which is 20 percent owned by Alibaba.

China Southern Airlines begins new service to South Island

Asia's largest airline has begun an historic year-round service between Guangzhou and Christchurch, with the first Dreamliner carrying several VIPs landing just before 5pm. China Southern Airlines, in partnership with Christchurch Airport and the South Island tourism industry, will operate the direct service three times a week from today.

Google's experimental wireless service will work with tablets too - CNET

Google on Wednesday will allow Project Fi subscribers with cellular-enabled tablets such as the Nexus 7 and iPad Air 2 to hop on its service. All they need is a SIM card, or the tiny piece of plastic that lets your device connect to cellular networks, the company said in a blog post on Tuesday.
