Graffiti found on the tail cone of United Flight 869 were of concern to flight attendants working the flight last July 14. For years the threat of terrorism - and the fear that threat often engenders - has loomed large in the airline industry both for passengers and airline staff. That fact was made clear yet again Tuesday when 13 flight attendants for Chicago-based United Airlines filed a complaint with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration claiming they were unfairly fired from their jobs on Oct. 9 and 10 of last year.

Southwest Airlines' on-time performance drops sharply in December

The on-time arrival numbers released today by FlightView, a global provider of airline and airport performance data, show Dallas-based Southwest's percentage of flights arriving on time in December dropped sharply to 71.3 percent from 78.5 percent in November. In early 2014, Kelly said the airline he heads would begin to show marked improvement in its on-time performance by year's end.

Labour costs and the weak euro have erased gains derived from lower oil prices while American airlines capture the full benefit. Markit's securities financing data together with company performance analysis indicates that European airlines are not able to take advantage of the windfall provided by dramatically lower oil prices.
