Renewable Fuels from Algae boosted by NREL refinery process.

New biorefinery process developed by scientists at NREL has proven to be significantly more effective at producing ethanol from algae than previous research. Researchers found that by skipping solid-liquid separation process and exposing all algae components directly to fermentation conditions, both ethanol and lipids can be recovered simultaneously. Dubbed Combined Algal Processing (CAP), process is detailed in a new paper which can be found in the journal Algal Research.

NREL Testimony stresses sustainable transportation innovation.

Testifying before U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, NREL's Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center Director Chris Gearhart stressed role of innovation and technology in automobile industry, particularly connected and autonomous vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell technologies, and internal combustion vehicles that operate on biofuels. Members of committee are evaluating bipartisan bill that will boost innovation within automotive industry through public and private partnerships.

NREL Explains Cellulolytic Activity of vital microorganism.

While investigating Clostridium thermocellum performance, researchers at NREL and BioEnergy Science Center (BESC) discovered that said microorganism utilizes common cellulase degradation mechanisms – free enzymes and scaffolded enzyme attached to cell – and new category of scaffolded enzymes not attached to cell. Paper reporting this discovery's potential, "Dramatic performance of Clostridium Thermocellum explained by its wide range of cellulase modalities," appears in Science Advances.
