NREL Research advances hydrogen production efforts.
2015-12-23 14:31:09| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Researchers at NREL have made advances toward affordable photoelectrochemical (PEC) production of hydrogen. Researchers decided to examine molecular catalysts outside of liquid solution they are normally studied in to see if they could attach catalyst directly onto surface of semiconductor. They were able to put layer of titanium dioxide on surface of semiconductor and bond molecular catalyst to TiO2. Their work showed molecular catalysts can be as highly active as precious metal-based catalysts.

Number of NREL Inventions surpassed previous years.
2015-12-22 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Last fiscal year, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) came up with 169 inventions. ROI process represents first step in protecting and eventually transferring federally funded research to private sector, and investment of patent protection is undertaken on about half of ROIs submitted according to NREL TTO director Kristin Gray. Last year's ROI submissions, which also include development of software, topped previous record of 134 set in fiscal 2011.

NREL Research advances understanding of photoelectrodes.
2015-12-07 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Scientists of NREL have developed a new spectroscopic probe that could lead to better photoelectrochemical cells, which can be used to convert solar energy into transportable chemical fuels. By using newly developed probe, scientists uncovered the role that a titanium dioxide (TiO2) / GaInP2 interface plays in the photoconversion process. Paper on the discovery, "Semiconductor interfacial carrier dynamics via photoinduced electric fields," was published in Science Magazine.
