NREL Launches Sustainable Mobility Initiative, partners with CDOT.

2016-02-01 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Kicking off its Sustainable Mobility Initiative, NREL partnered with Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) on $20 million RoadX transportation program. Initiative approaches transportation as integrated system in which travelers and transportation resources are viewed as dynamic network that can be used to optimize mobility and reduce related energy consumption and emissions. Drawing on cross-cutting research capabilities, NREL will offer solutions that support CDOT's RoadX program.

NREL theorizes defects could improve solar cells.

2016-01-14 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Deep-level defects frequently hamper efficiency of solar cells, but NREL research suggests that defects with properly engineered energy levels can improve carrier collection out of cell, or improve surface passivation of absorber layer. Researchers introduced defects within thin tunneling SiO2 layer that forms part of "passivated contact" for carrier collection, and within Al2O3 surface passivation layer next to Si cell wafer. In both cases, specific defects were identified to be beneficial.

NREL and CSEM set solar cell conversion efficiency record.

2016-01-08 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Scientists at NREL and at Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) jointly set new world record for converting non-concentrated (1-sun) sunlight into electricity using dual-junction III-V/Si solar cell. At 29.8%, newly certified efficiency was set using top cell of gallium indium phosphide, developed by NREL, and bottom cell of crystalline silicon, which was developed by CSEM using silicon heterojunction technology. Both cells were made separately and then stacked by NREL.

NREL Study shows renewable energy yielded sizable benefits.

2016-01-08 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Study by researchers from NREL and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates that $2.2 billion in benefits came from reduced greenhouse gas emissions and $5.2 billion from reductions in other air pollution, in mid-range estimates, for state renewable portfolio standard (RPS) policies operating in 2013. RPS policies require utilities or other electricity providers to meet a minimum portion of their load with eligible forms of renewable electricity.
