NREL Helps Establish New PV Quality Standards for manufacturers.
2016-02-11 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Working with global partners, researchers at NREL completed 5 years of work toward establishing international quality standard for manufacturing photovoltaic (PV) modules. Supplementing existing ISO-9001 and jointly developed by IEC and International PV Quality Assurance Task Force (PVQAT), new standard appears in "Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules - Guidelines for increased confidence in PV module design qualification and type approval."

NREL puts claims for solar cell efficiency to the test.
2016-02-10 14:31:07| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
To test how effective a photovoltaic device is, NREL uses solar simulators that can produce from 1-sun—which equals 1,000 W/m²—to about 2,000 suns. Solar Cell Efficiency Tables list records set by 23 different technologies. NREL validated 6 records, including one for mechanically stacked solar cell made of gallium indium phosphide and crystalline silicon that was developed jointly by NREL and Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology. Efficiency of dual-junction cell was measured at 29.8%.

NREL Method monitors materials during manufacturing.
2016-02-10 14:31:07| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
NREL has issued patent for method that rapidly characterizes specialized materials during manufacturing without interrupting workflow. Characterization of materials is accomplished via wide-angular illumination on conveyor belt or roll-to-roll processing platform. Spectral imaging and reciprocal optics are then utilized to assess features such as thickness, surface conditions, and uniformity. Typical applications include manufacturing of fuel cell components and semiconductor wafers.
