The Mission Our customer, ESAESOC builds, operates and maintains satellite ground stations, which belong to its ESTRACK network for spacecraft operations, at various sites around the world. Sites typically include the following infrastructure Buildings operations, power plant, antenna tower, storage Auxiliary installations access control system, CCTV, fire detection, water distribution and other site installations Grounding and lightning systems Lighting systems Building monitoring systems Firefighting systems. ESA requires engineers to define the specifications for the infrastructure, assist procurement, and to review, supervise, monitor, control and validate all related activities. The Challenge We are looking for an experienced Systems Engineer to provide support to ESAESOC in the following aspects of site infrastructure engineering Antenna Site Infrastructure Systems Power Systems Cooling Systems Buildings and Civil Infrastructure. The tasks of the Site Infrastructure Engineer comprise, but are not limited to, the following Support in the definition of requirements for site infrastructure, power and cooling systems Monitoring and guide, for ESA and under ESA responsibility, the development and procurement activities contracted to external industries this includes the definition of tasks, the engineering analysis review, the production, the acceptance and the handover for use for spacecraft operations Onsite supervision of enhancement and maintenance of site infrastructure activities buildings, power, cooling Participation in the definition, execution and evaluation of pre development studies by Industrial Contractors, related to site infrastructure, power and cooling systems Engineering support to adhoc corrective maintenance and operation tasks, during problem finding and rectification, requiring specific technical background in site infrastructure, power and cooling. The work will be performed primarily at the ESOC premises in Darmstadt, Germany, and will involve frequent and sometimes long duration travelling to locations worldwide. This is a fulltime position as a Terma employee for an placement at ESOC of 3 years, with a possible extension of 2 years. Your Qualifications Suitable candidates will hold a university degree MSc in Systems Engineering or similar, and have knowledge and experience in the following Power and emergency power systems, including detailed knowledge of the related subsystems like diesel generators, batteries, transformers, UPS, MV and LV switchgear, monitoring and control Advanced equipment cooling systems, design, production and acceptance Air conditioning systems, design, production and acceptance Civil infrastructure and building monitoring systems Grounding and lightning protection systems Firefighting systems Security systems Infrastructure standards, local and international Education as a site safety coordinator can be obtained later. Candidates should have 5 years experience in a similar position. JOB DESCRIPTION Responsibilities Duties Tasks The consultant shall support the activities of ground segment developments in the areas of Ground Stations, RF and Telecommunications. In doing this, the consultant shall support Engineering activities of Phase B of future ground segments in the areas of Ground Stations, RF and Telecommunications The follow up of the detailed design and development activities of Phase CD of the future ground segments in the areas of Ground Stations, RF and Telecommunications The maintenance and evolution in phase E to the other programmes within EUMETSAT MSG, MTG, EPS, Jason2, ,.. in the areas of Telecommunications, RF and Ground Stations, Participation in the daytoday activities of the STC Lab managed within EUMETSAT small Telecommunications and RF laboratory supporting system simulations and analysis as well as small applications developments based mainly on MathLab and Labview e.g. tailored Remote Spectrum Analyser MMIs. The consultant will be a member of a multidisciplinary system engineering team and will report directly to the SEP Ground Stations Engineering Team Leader, however when working in a given programme, the consultant shall report also within the established programme structure. In the performance of these tasks, the consultant shall apply the relevant organisational and programmatic quality management procedures as well as the relevant ground stations system engineering standards. Qualifications The Consultant shall have a university degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline relevant to the job profile together with the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision. Required knowledge Heshe shall have, as a prerequisite, a demonstrated experience in a similar function for at least 5 years. This experience shall include in particular Ground stations system and subsystem design and development for TTC, mission specific andor satellite communications ground stations TTC baseband equipment and SLE compliant implementations Technical background in the specification and VV of ground stations and large antennas and tracking systems for LEO and GEO satellites ACU and receivers inclusive Knowledge of modulationdemodulation schemes applied by Ground to Space ICD for TTC and payload data transmission e.g. ECSS and CCSDS Standards. In addition, the knowledge and experience of the following processesareas is considered as an asset Design and requirements engineering of large and complex Earth Observation related ground stations e.g. MSG PGS or EPS CDAs Usage of High Data Rate Demodulators System experience with Link budget analysis and tools in S, X and Ka Band. Standard RF and microwave tools and SW package for generation of signal processing related simulations andor semiautomated measurement procedures for complementing the capabilities of the STC Lab. The Consultant shall be in possession of sound management and interpersonal skills to conduct the responsibilities described above autonomously and with a minimum level of supervision, exhibiting good oral and written communications skills, analytical capabilities, and motivation. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the consultant must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other.
