Mexico pushes back shared network deadline to 28 September
2016-03-23 14:46:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Mexico's Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) is set to announce the winning bidders of its tender to build a national shared mobile network on 28 September, over a month later than planned, reports local daily El Universal, citing SCT head of telecoms policy Ezequiel Gil Huerta. The SCT initially said it would announce its decision on 24 August but the sheer number and complexity of the bids submitted has resulted in another postponement to the long-delayed project. The country formally launched the shared network tender in January, announcing that the winning bidder will be awarded 90 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band and a 20-year public-private partnership to build the network in exchange for a commitment to cover at least 85 percent of the population.

Nest Labs, ARM back Thread home network standard
2014-07-15 10:52:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) A new Internet of Things industry group called Thread has launched, focusing on wireless networking in the home. The founding members of the Thread Group are Yale Security, Silicon Labs, Samsung Electronics, Nest Labs, Freescale Semiconductor, Big Ass Fans and ARM. They will focus on developing Thread, a new IP-based wireless networking protocol offered as an alternative to current 802.15.4 networking technologies. Its backers said Thread can connect more than 250 devices into a low-power, wireless mesh network that also includes direct internet and cloud access for each device. A version of Thread is already being used in commercial products from Nest, and "millions" of existing 802.15.4 wireless devices already on the market can run Thread with a software upgrade, the group said. The Thread Group will focus on educating product developers and consumers on the benefits of Thread through marketing and product certification.
