In the execution of the tasks, the postholder will work in close cooperation with other staff of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. This will lead to better understanding of the processes that drive Earths dynamo, which currently appears to be weakening. By studying the complexities of Earths protective shield, Swarm will provide a clear insight into processes occurring inside the planet. Along with measurements of conditions in the upper atmosphere, a better knowledge of the nearEarth environment and the Suns influence on the planet can be realised. In particular, launched the 22nd November 2013, Swarm aims at providing an unique view inside Earth to study Core dynamics, geodynamo processes and coremantle interaction Magnetism of the lithosphere and its geological context 3D electrical conductivity related to mantle composition The weak electric currents related to ocean flow As well as to study the Suns influence on the Earth system by Analysing electric currents in the magnetosphere and ionosphere Understanding the impact of solar wind on the dynamics of the upper atmosphere Due to its very innovative concept and unique data, the full exploitation of Swarm data will require a dedicated effort to explore its full potential from both a scientific and an operational perspective. In this context, the candidate will be involved in two main activities Support the scientific and technical supervision of science projects, carried out by external teams of experts and scientists, addressing mainly ionospheric physics process understanding and characterization, enhancing models, solid earth modelling and the study of the processes and interactions between the ionosphere, the magnetosphere and the lower atmosphere. Carry out a dedicated research focusing on the scientific exploitation of the Swarm mission with special focus on fostering new science results from the new Swarm data also in synergy with other datasets. Location ECSAT, Harwell, United Kingdom Our team and mission The overall goal of the ESA Climate Office is to expand awareness, use and scientific impact of Earth Observation EO data records, especially from ESA satellites, by working with the international climate research and modelling communities. This is achieved through the following lines of activities Implementation of the Climate Change Initiative programme CCIcci.esa.int, that aims to develop a lasting and structured dialogue with climate research and modelling communities worldwide, analysing their needs for longterm satellitebased observations of the climate system, as expressed via the Global Climate Observing System GCOS, and assessing their feedback on available EO data records Translating these needs into technical performance specifications for Fundamental Climate Data Records FCDR and Essential Climate Variables ECV based on the complete ESA EO satellite archives, taking due care to account for the nature of different satellites Initiating and managing a suite of scientific analyses, data exploitation and system development activities to enhance ESAs capability to generate these records for climate research, modelling, attribution, projection, prediction, trend assessment, and data assimilation, as well as validation of the data sets with the corresponding scientific users. Location EAC, PorzWahn, Germany Our team and mission The Internal Research Fellow will be based at the European Astronaut Centre EAC. The EAC tasks focus on the human component of human spaceflight astronaut selection, training, medical support and surveillance, as well as support for astronauts and their families in preparation for and during space missions to the International Space Station ISS. Two projects developed within the scope of Future Human and Robotics Exploration activities are CAVES Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behaviour and performance Skills and PANGAEA Planetary ANalogue Geological and Astrobiological Exercise for Astronauts. CAVES is a multidisciplinary and multicultural exploration mission in a cave. The expedition recreates situations that are spaceflightanalogous in terms of perception of risk, crew composition, isolation, confinement, and at the same time provides a real opportunity for spaceflightlike operations, science, equipment testing and exploration, in preparation for future planetary endeavours. During the expeditions, different technologies for cave mapping, navigation, underground communication and documentation have been tested and several scientific experiments focusing on the subsurface environment have been performed. PANGAEA is a geological field training course that develops observational and decisionmaking skills in identifying prominent geological features infield, conducting efficient sampling and reporting correctly to the ground the observations gathered during the field activity. The course involves the use of technological tools for sampling and scientific analysis infield and also the development of operation concepts for geological field activities. The project is conducted in European geopark planetary analogue environments. To make the analogue experience of CAVES PANGAEA combined with the operational experience of the EAC available to other ESA activities too, in particular for the preparation of human and robotic exploration, opportunities for research and testing associated with CAVESPANGAEA analogue events have been extended to analogue field testing in order to acquire knowledge of how to develop exploration and field geology strategies for planetary missions, with a specific focus on lunar settings and to allow for the demonstration of human and robotic explorationenabling technologies. This position is made available by the Italian Space Agency ASI as part of the ESAASI integrated team. Our Earth Science Group has a vacancy for a Postdoc fm Vacancy number 1373 Project Outline In October 2017 ESAs Sentinel5 Precursor mission was launched with the TROPOMI instrument as its single payload. TROPOMI is a collaboration between the Netherlands and ESA. SRON is the coPrincipal Investigator Institute and responsible a.o. for the operational algorithms for CO and CH4. Currently the mission is in the socalled commissioning phase, but first results already showed the unprecedented combination of high spatial resolution, spatial coverage and precision see e.g. httpwww.tropomi.nlovertropomieerstebeelden. It is clear that with TROPOMI a huge step forward is being made in measuring the atmospheric composition of the troposphere and a wealth of new information is obtained. In this project we want to scientifically exploit the new CO measurements of TROPOMI on local scales, studying e.g. point and city scale sources, as well as regional to global scales looking at large scale sources, atmospheric transport and photochemical removal of CO. For this we will use atmospheric models such as WRFCHEM and TM5, in combination with algorithms for flux optimization. Tasks The main task of the postdoc is to interpret the TROPOMI CO measurements and publish the results in peer reviewed papers. Topics for the research include estimation of CO emissions, its attribution to specific source processes, the study of dynamical processes governing the transport of CO pollution, etc. These, and potentially other, activities aim at taking full benefit of the new and exciting CO TROPOMI observations. Requirements For this project we are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated and result driven scientist with a PhD degree in atmospheric physicschemistry or similar degree, with extensive experience in atmospheric modelling preferably of CO at various scales local, regional andor global. Experience in using atmospheric models for the interpretation of satellite measurements and inverse modeling to obtain emissions is considered a clear asset.
