Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description The Research Fellow will be based in the Advanced Concepts Team ACT, a group of research fellows postdocs and young graduates who originate from a broad variety of academic fields and aim at an academic career. Its task is to monitor, perform and foster research on advanced space systems, innovative concepts and working methods. It interacts externally almost exclusively with academia and operates as a truly interdisciplinary team bound to high scientific standards. Via its research, the team acts as a crossdepartmental pathfinder to explore novel, potentially promising areas for ESA and the space sector, ranging from applied to basic fundamental research topics. An important task of the team is to communicate scientific trends and results, as input to the strategic planning of the Agency. The team has been working on improving fundamentals algorithms and methods to aid mission analysis since 2002, pioneering topics such as global optimization for trajectory design and differential algebra in orbital mechanics. Asteroid deflection, autonomous on orbit assembly, distributed control, active space debris removal were studied earlyon by the team facilitating their understanding within the Agency. Explore synergies between global optimization techniques and lowthrust trajectory models or between differential algebra and guidance and navigation algorithms. Further develop open source software developed by the ACT and of use in advanced mission analysis pygmo optimization, pykep astrodynamics, audi differential algebra Coordinate the team participation to competitions in the aerospace field including, but not limited to, the GTOC. Provide support to all ACT scientific projects by proposing advanced mission analysis concepts and tools. Liaise with the ESA Concurrent Design Facility and the ESA Space Operations Centre in view of transferring knowledge on advanced mission analysis concepts and tools. As the team does not have a professorlike position, ACT RFs are academically more independent than most postdocs. This implies more freedom but also more responsibility for their research directions and approaches. ACT RFs are joining a diverse, changing and interdisciplinary research team embedded in a large space agency, in contrast to a more specialised, focused research group with close or similar competences. ACT RFs need to actively reach out to other disciplines, to bring their competences to interdisciplinary research projects and to encourage other researchers to join them in their core research projects research at the intersections of disciplines. The study and development of efficient IR algorithms and the adoptiondevelopment of advanced natural language processing techniques to extracting knowledge from those data is at the core of this fellowship. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Our team and mission The Lunar Lander Team in the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration is leading the development of ESAs contributions to the Russian led LunaGlob Luna 25, LunaResurs Orbiter Luna 26 and Luna Resurs Lander Luna 27 missions. These contributions include the PILOT precision landing and hazard avoidance system, the SPECTRUM communications and operations service and the PROSPECT package to assess the resource potential of lunar regolith, including polar cold trapped ice, whilst addressing major questions for lunar science. The team is responsible for the development, delivery and operation of ESAs contribution, coordinating the interfaces with Russia and working with European industry and the science community. Through the implementation of these missions the team is generating knowledge, technology and expertise to prepare for ESAs involvement in future exploration missions and the potential exploitation of lunar resources. The Strategy and Innovation Team in the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration supports the development, evolution and implementation of ESAs exploration strategy and manages the benefits resulting from ESAs space exploration activities. This includes supporting international space exploration for a, including the international Space Exploration Coordination Group ISECG, and supporting the development of new partnerships and governance schemes. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description The Software Systems Division covers engineering, verification and validation techniques for space systems, in particular in the functional domain. This includes missioncritical software, software technology for flight as well as ground systems, realtime software embedded in spacecraft systems and payloads, but also ground facilities software, including electrical ground support equipment, test benches, databases and simulation and modelling tools. Future missions will rely on an increased level of autonomy to enable more complex missions and an increased performance. For the design of such missions, increased use is made of modelbased methods and tools, impacting the engineering information management along the lifecycle of the development. The impact of this evolution on the verification and validation process needs to be fully understood to ensure the required quality of these missions. These systems will operate in a partially unknown environment and will feature adaptation and selfaware behaviour that could lead to emergent behaviour. To address the shortcomings of traditional Verification and Validation VV approach for space autonomous systems, the incremental development of the Harwell Robotics and Autonomy Facility HRAF has been initiated. The present development focuses on two out of three main activities of the VV process simulation and experimentation, with planetary rover as main application. In support of this development, the research will address formal methods and verification as part of the model based engineering process for specifying, developing, testing and evaluating space autonomous systems. As to achieve the proposed ambitious goal, these specific objectives are defined Identify gaps where traditional VV framework are misaligned or deficient for space autonomous systems Develop methods to automate requirements evaluation for testability and traceability Develop techniques to support appropriate decisions with traceable evidence during design phase Demonstrate the benefits and advantages of the research outcomes in HRAF. The research will entail SysML or equivalent modelling at system level, and mixed reality testing of autonomous robotic systems using HRAF HLA based distributed simulation environment. The post will involve collaboration across ESA directorates, academic and industrial partners.
